These are highly trained soldiers first and foremost, their basic training is tougher than some of the other regiments, they do a two year rotation of ceremonial duties then go back to normal military duties. Those red tunics are only worn for ceremonial purposes the rest of the time they wear normal uniforms or battledress. The things mentioned here may seem ridiculous - but these are highly disciplined individuals, who have sworn an oath to protect the queen, they are extremely proud to be selected for these duties and take it very seriously.

We used to hide our cigarettes and lighters in our bearskins. And have a smoke round the corner. There are sentry posts where noone can see you

If a guard faints to attention he doesn’t get punished for it, he get rewarded for it.

There's an interesting CBS news report on YouTube about Guardsmen fainting and what they do to prevent it - 'The Queen's Guards try not to faint as temperatures soar'.
I just looked at another video 'Watch Guardsman faint at Trooping the Colour ceremony during Queen's 91st birthday' and that thing about fainting to attention is real.

There is a very good documentary which follows some new soldiers in training for the Grenadier Guards. It’s called “Guarding The Queen”.

I was once in The Mall, watching The Change of the Guard in the front row and accidently step a bit forward, almost in front of the advancing column. Jumped back in a second. Very intimidating and terrifying.

These are actual combat troops As well. And have been involved in every war Britain has been in for Four Hundered Years Plus. Except Korea. Things have changed some what since i was in. Drill standards dont seem to be that high. But thats down to training from the Top. S.N.C.O. are just as bad as the Guardsmen. Which is a shame to be a Guardsmen you were HATED by the rest of the British Army. Which then was a back handed complement. I know things move on and change, And maybe i am a sad old Soldier who thinks in the past. But the 2nd Coldstream Guards in the 70s was some unit. This is not meant to be a pop at the guys in now. Second to none

The footguards wear red tunics in spring/summer and a grey great coat in autumn/winter, they are on duty for a specific time during each season it’s the same for the horseguards at Horseguards Parade they wear cloaks in autumn/winter and their usual red tunics for The Lifeguards and blue tunics for The Blues and Royals in spring/summer. The footguards will point their rifles at you and The Horseguards will draw their swords if they see something. You won’t know if The Footguards have bullets in their rifles unless you know the current terrorist threat level.

Our Queen celebrates her 70th Anniversary, as the Monarch, next month. Will you be doing a reaction on it? 70 is Platinum. She is the longest reigning Monarch.

I have seen what people do and say to them. They should be able to fire a warning shot!

Don’t be to shocked about the toilet thing. The guards are all young men and only do 2 hours a time on stag. I was a guards man and never knew anyone who had to go to the toilet where they stood. If you where ill and needed to go you could get someone’s attention and something would be sorted. You wouldn’t be to popular though.

If they leave their post to go to the bathroom the post is unguarded which is far worse than peeing their pants

I don't know why anyone would want to be a Royal Guard. The pay is poor, the rules are very strict and you can get members of the public trying to get a reaction out of you or blocking your way etc...

That’s disgusting that they are still using real fur for the hats.
It takes one Canadian Black bear pelt to make one hat. Apparently one hat can last for 80 years.
