Basically, so when your tailgates down, you can still have your license plate out it helps you avoid getting pulled over by the police

The plate is mounted to the gate. So when you have to haul something with the gate down, your plate can still be visible

It is so your plate is visible when driving with the tailgate open.

You sir, are making the point of why saying "hello" to a car salesman is more communication than needed

Flip up license plate, put tailgate down, and step back. You will see the license plate when tailgate is down. My ex owned a Baja.

That made so much sense to me as soon as he opened it.

Makes the plate visible when the gates down as others have stated. Was the same on Willys station wagons of the fifties. Super cool feature of the time.

It's so when your tailgate is down you can still display your license plate because on all your other trucks the license plate is on the bumper not the tailgate so Subaru did that so the license plate can still be seen if your driving with the tailgate down think about it ....!!!!😂😂😂😂😂

The baja had a removable bed extension that you can buy from factory. The license plate feature there is so it's still legal to drive with the extension installed.

It's for when the tail gate is down, so the plate can still be read from behind. It's a cool design really

So many people already figured it out. When you're driving with the tailgate down your license is visible. It was part of their marketing to attract trail bikers which often put their tailgate down in route to the trails. Part of a getting you to the trails marketing campaign.

It does that so if you're tailgate is down while you're driving you can still see the license plate

Northern subaru dealers: This is so you can wash the salt off behind your plate.
Southern subaru dealers: This holds your beer... drop the tailgate for a keg though.
California subaru dealer: That is a premium option... it allows you to drop the tailgate to get maximum MPG while still showing off your license plate...which is legally required here.
New York city subaru dealer: Ok so.. this.. we suggest you remove... cause your plate WILL get stolen..

You’re a terrible car salesman if you can’t even figure this out.

When the bed extender is being used, the gate has to be down, so the plate flips up so you can still see the plate when driving with the gate down.

Its there to hold your beer for when you have to push it after it breaks down.

it's both to use your plate as a table for very light things, and to allow the plate to still be visible when the tailgate is down

The Baja has a bed extender so when you extend the bed people can see your plate

The flip panel on a 2006 Subaru Baja's license plate serves as a protective cover for the rear bed-mounted spare tire. By flipping down the license plate, it exposes the spare tire, allowing access for removal or replacement when necessary. This design feature helps protect the spare tire from the elements and offers convenience for maintenance or usage.

It’s for holding your beer while you get your surf board down. Like, bro, hit the waves dude. 😂😂
