But who is to decide who is most fit to rule then? Throughout history, it has been whoever is the most ruthless and willing to grab power and wield it, not the most likely to use it for the benefit of society. If you let society vote, you have a slightly larger chance that people who want the benefit of society will end up in charge.

Representative liberal democracy is not about giving people influence over political decisions. It is about giving incentives for the rulers to make people satisfied with the political net result, otherwise the rulers get replaced in the next election. A great feature of democracy is that we can switch rulers without having a bloodbath.

Every governing system has it advantage and disadvantage. Comparing politic and government system to getting a medical attention when one is sick is comparing apple to oranges.

After all, bureaucrats and government officials are trained professionals so it's not a genuine dichotomy we're dealing with. Democracy is about choosing the goal of the voyage, not about sailing by committee.
