The great Dan Hodge in 1956 TRIPLED UP. He pinned his way thru the folkstyle NCAA's, then proceeded to pin his way thru the Greco Olympic Trials AND thru the Freestyle Olympic trials, also. This feat will likely never be duplicated.

Chael is absolutely right. Folk style is much better if you want to learn to fight. You have to actually control the other person, especially on the ground.

This commentary was spot on.
In fact, I personally feel that Folksyle should really be the international wrestling style rather than Greco or Freestyle.

TRUTH... many athletes agree Wrestling ... Varsity High School or College level is one of the hardest Sports you will ever do, grueling physically and mentally taxing even men who have played in the NFL have spoken about how tough wrestling is there is no team helping you it's just you out there one on one looking to BEST the other person with a combination of speed strength and technique

I noticed this when Romero kept getting double legged by Brunson and he is an Olympic medalist wrestler. Then it after thinking about it I realized he didn't do any NCAA wrestling which is why Askren and Lesner are great at take downs. Cormier although wrestled in the Olympics it seemed like he was better in folkstyle where he only lost to Cael Sanderson

I agree I have tried folk, freestyle and greco-roman. I prefer folkstyle because it's more realistic for fighting.

Folk style teaches you how to ride and control and keep guys down. It also teaches you how to get up quickly and do technical ground control. Folkstyle with some greco is a beast combo for mma.

CATCH Wrestling is best an grandfather to folkstyle ..it can defend be counted all other styles ..arm wrench to a Greco clinch Jon Jones did to golver..chokes cranks to freestyle leg shots ..subs off back to a pin or control positions of folkstyle etc

speak the truth chael.. i wrestled in high school and college and I swear when I started even training jujitsu the explosiveness associated with collegiate wrestling it really helped me with powering into transitions. I can see why it's so useful in MMA its brutal in a fight too most people don't know how to defend a anaconda with fists.I just hope the Olympic keeps wrestling .

The ability that is underestimated the most in folk style is the ability to get up. You know why watching Dominick Cruz, TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrant fight each other is awesome? Its because every time one gets a take down the other one gets right back up to their feet. Dominick was a solid college wrestler that has only improved since, Cody was a high school state champion, and TJ wrestled for Cal State Fullerton which is high level. So their wrestling is pretty close to even.

I have very very rudimentary wrestling experience, about 2 years. The vast majority of that experience was in freestyle and Greco-Roman. However, given that limited experience the type of wrestling that has always stuck with me from a fundamental standpoint has been folkstyle. It is the style I use to teach my kids self defense concepts.

love how he'll just finish a hard sweaty roll and say 'hey colin, hit record'

George St Pierre is proof that you don't have specialize in either as well. He has been probably the best in mma history with his takedowns & ground control and never wrestled in college.

Freestyle is objectively better for total takedowns, it's crazy how nobody ever mentions this lmao

Honestly what made this clear for me was Yoel Romero. He wasn’t a collegiate wrestlers and in mma he hasn’t been able to implement a wrestle heavy control style because his specialty wasn’t strong on control.

Didn't he say that Greco Roman wrestling is the most important wrestling to learn for mma

Folkstyle for ground control but Greco-Roman wrestling is better for the stand up aspect of mma
