You can interpret this scene as both

-Watto is genuinely glad to see Anakin again, because he always had some attachment to the boy (in a twisted way since he literally owned him)

-Watto is scared shitless of the boy he enslaved coming back with a lightsaber and Jedi training and is acting nice so he doesn’t piss him off

I always kinda liked in this scene how Watto (despite being his former slaver owner) is genuinely happy to see the kid whom he hasn’t seen in a decade.

Looking back, Hayden Christensen was actually a better actor than I remembered

What makes this scene better is that Hayden Christensen had to make up the language he spoke the night before ( Wattonese ). Hayden basically asked George “ what does wattonese sound like “ because it said in the script “ speaks wattonese “ and George literally responded with “ it can sound like anything as long as it doesn’t sound like a language already established or any real life language “. So Hayden literally stayed up all night the night before this scene was shot trying to create his own language for George. God he doesn’t get enough credit for these movies.

Am I the only one who thinks Watto is cheerful, friendly and overly helpful here because he’s subconsciously thinking; “This is the kid I kept a slave for years, a few years back I sold his Mom and now he’s shown up fully grown and a Jedi with a lightsaber on his belt.”

Anakin’s quiet rage is so well portrayed here. You can tell he’s barely restraining himself

Watto: Ani, my boy! You’ve grown!
Anakin: So have you. Grown more beautiful, I mean.

Harsh as Watto was, he was actually a much kinder and fair master to Anakin and Shmi than most slave-owners are. He benefited from Anakin's technological expertise but he also encouraged it, and he gave Shmi and Anakin their own home and even allowed Shmi to run her own little business to earn extra money to care for herself and her son

After Anakin left with Qui-gonn, Shmi fell into a depression and Watto feared she'd try to escape despite the explosive implanted into her body supposed to deter that, and he quietly deactivated it because he was afraid Shmi would try to escape just to kill herself, showing he'd truly cared about her. When Lars started courting Shmi, he tried to keep them apart but he soon saw how happy Shmi was becoming again that he agreed to sell her to Lars, knowing she deserved to be happy

1:02 that moment of silence is powerful.

So you're telling me this man basically created a new language..
and people still call him a bad actor

I love how expressive Watto is at 1:02

You can really see the dots connecting in his head, and those subtle eye movements are better than some real-life actors Ive seen

The animators went above and beyond with the prequels, and you'll never convince me otherwise

Something I never noticed as a child with Hayden is how well he weaves emotions between his lines, creating tension and yet not staying stale with them. Plus we can see he is using this calm front he will later adopt as Vader permanent persona.
Maybe I am over analyzing it but prequels seem to have quite a bit of depth that stayed unoticed the first go around.

Ita ridiculous how much people criticized Haydens acting. Look at 2:03, his voice says "calm jedi" while his expression and physical acting say "im barely restraining myself from force choking Watto right here and now".

"maybe you can help me with some deadbeats who owe me a lotta money!"

Lmao love watto, such an underrated character of the whole saga. Also love the dialogue and delivery Watto has when realizing who Annie is now. It reminds me of many adults i knew as a kid whom I then met later. They always had that same expression and intonation as Watto does; great acting and great scene.

Knowing he improvised the language is beyond impressive, hayden was a better actor than many gave him credit for

Always thought this was a nice change for Watto. It was like he saw Anakin as a friend or a nephew instead of a former slave.

The little wing flap stutter as Anakin places the repair Droid down tugs a string in my heart, like your dog realizing you're back home. It really shows how much he missed Anakin

Fun Fact: Hayden Christensen actually made up a language on the spot for this scene.

Best dialogue scene in the prequels. It's one of the few you can unironically enjoy. It's well directed and paced and there's more going on with the visuals than just people delivering exposition in a room while robots fly in the background.

Seeing a freakin' fly on Watto's face, and him not even caring (right before recognising Anakin) is further proof he had gone through a lot of hard times.
