This is probably how 70% of guys feel. Only difference is they are just above water at the moment. Working really hard and not having things work out is the worst. He sounds like he likes what he does and wants to continue, but it just won't pay the bills. Keep applying at jobs is the best advice. You can still contract things out on the weekends or after work. Once you have steady income it allows you to breath and think clearer. You could also get a whatever job just for some extra income in the short term.

Come to Northern Michigan. Hard to rent here but a labor shortage in a traditional community, that prides itself as a great place to raise kids and tends to favor mom & pop shops and has less expensive taxes (but you pay for snow tires and snow suits each year for the kids) will make this guy’s life a little easier a little wiggle room.
