My hobby ptoject was a file server for a few months. I got really uncomfortable with FS access permissions so I wrote a virtual FS. What did that enable me to do? I learned working with raw data, virtualization and even native encryption.
The project doesn't have to make sense. It's already a success if you got more knowledge out of it.

Fax. Your problem solving just improves naturally because your brain gets used to mulling over solutions. Build something that breaks a bit better each iteration.

Very true. Working in development almost 2 years now. But it feels like I don't write anything of my own when I'm working.Fix bugs, expand features, merge conflicts, writing docs...During my vacation I started over again from scratch with CPP.

You have to write a looot of tests for code you wrote to understand the quality of your code and is it easy to use

Don't do that. You have to READ code and understand.
But affiliate money is better then genuine advice i guess.

I just google shit. If my future company blocks internet access/stackoverflow im screwed

I disagree. You got to think more about the code you have written. Think and write plain english about your code.
