Ankle Lateral Malleolar Fracture

Показать описание
A lateral malleolar fracture refers to a break in the lateral malleolus, which is the outer part of the ankle joint. This is part of the fibula, one of the two bones in the lower leg. This type of fracture is common, often resulting from twisting injuries or falls.
The severity of these fractures can vary. They may be isolated or a damage to the ligament structures.
Some common symptoms of a lateral malleolar fracture can include:
1. Pain in the area of the fracture, which is usually immediate and can be severe.
2. Swelling and bruising.
3. Difficulty in walking or bearing weight on the affected side.
Treatment depends on the severity and type of the fracture. If the fracture is nondisplaced, treatment can often be non-surgical and may include immobilization using a cast or a boot to allow the bone to heal.
If the fracture is displacedf broken bone are not aligned) or if there is instability in the ankle joint, surgical intervention may be required. This often involves internal fixation, where screws and plates are used to hold the bone fragments in place while they heal.
