Bo Burnham - Welcome to the Internet (from INSIDE): I had my husband join me recently to discuss "All Eyes on Me" and it was such an interesting experiment that I thought I'd share this discussion from the first song off of the special that we checked out. As filmmaker and songwriter, we were excited to experience this. Shortly after, we watched the full special. This was a few weeks ago. Chime in & Let's connect here, too:

Maybe I'm a little bit slower than other people. I took a while to get the "your inside is out" line. It's like.... before the internet everybody had their private lives inside, but now everybody knows everything about what you do because of social media and this volunteered exposition... so your inside is out. Very clever Mr.Burnham

My little sister actually brought something up that I thought was super interesting when I showed her this song. She said that she interpreted the lighting as kind of the space of the internet. The little dots everywhere resembled the universe to her and she said it made her think it was meant to show how the internet knows and has everything. Then when he brings up when the internet was first coming up, all that's there is the single spotlight because at that point, the internet didn't have everything (like he said, it was only blogs and like 2 chat rooms). Then when the lighting changes a 3rd time when talking about the 2 year old growing up with internet, it's super hazy. She saw that as the internet kind of hypnotizing people into unwittingly growing it and getting their kids into it. Then ends with both lighting because it has everything now and still is hypnotizing us to this day.

I hadn't seen a take like that yet so I thought it was super neat lol

Fun fact: it took him over a year to Film that entire special by himself. he wrote, directed it, edited it, etc.

Please continue pausing. I’m here for the analytical content. HOWEVER

Please wait until the end of lines to pause, and then rewind a few seconds. It feels disjointed if the rewind doesn’t happen. As someone who has listened to thousands of reaction videos, I promise you, it makes us want to watch more when you keep our minds running smoothly ;)

Love your takes. Thanks!

Such a surprisingly deep song. I wasn’t expecting a song that’s just so fun to listen to would have such double meaning and depth. In this song Bo himself IS the internet. And he plays the role of salesman, deceiver, and ferryman. The internet is almost a living thing. It has power, and it is NOT necessarily our friend. Devices like iPads “did exactly what we intended them to do”, ensnare and create an addiction. Apathy has become a tragedy and boredom is now a crime. Humanity was never intended to have access to everything at any point in time.

A tip: rewind like 2 seconds after pausing

I would love it if you let the part you're talking about end before you pause it, and then maybe rewind 5 seconds after you've analyzed it so you don't miss anything.

Am I the only one who's picked up on the break being another performance, that it's constructed to make you engage with the false sincerity because the moment I watched this and he started laughing I felt the mockery of "oh you thought that was real" and then the laugh becomes unhinged like made you fall for one more trick it had up its sleeve. I can't be the only one right?

during the harry potter part I feel like bo was about to laugh at his own joke.

One thing I think you missed is this song compositionally is genius for the reason of the accelerating tempo gives you the feeling of being constantly bombarded with information, which is exactly what the internet is. It's a constant bombardment of information from all angles. It's actually so fast that you can't think about it, and you even miss some of it.

This song starts off with the sense of innocence and like navigating the internet is easy, and it soon becomes overwhelming. And then you find the sinister undertones of the effect of the internet toward the end of the song.

I'm so happy that you caught his circus "ring leader" performance as he is embodying the internet! Like he is presenting all of these things we can find online as if it were a "freak show" (sorry for the bad/dehumanizing term), one strange element at a time in increasing increments to make the audience look all over the stage! No other reaction has noticed the circus elements of this song yet! Thank you!

As someone once said..

“The Internet is the best and worst thing humanity has every created.”

For example, the parents of this generation don’t understand why their kids are so absorbed in their devices because they didn’t grow up with that so therefore they don’t know how to help. They try to use the things that their parents taught them, but it doesn’t work because it’s not the same thing, it’s a completely different issue. Which leads to conflict and parents guilt tripping their kids and pointing out they’re addicted to their devices and making them feel like they’re the only people in the world with this issue. We are the very first generation with the particular problem and are the first of many more to come.

*And that personally scares me.*

He's portraying the internet as the villain speaking to Gen-Zers. They are hooked since they were two. He's evil saying its trapped us all and there's no way to put the genie back in the bottle.

I seriously think he perfected his look on how to make catchy trendy music. Simultaneously pouring his own emotions into it. The entire special is perfection . A rollercoaster of emotions.

Burnham has always been upfront with how much of a perfectionist he is with his art. He started on YouTube where you can fix and perfect. I personally think that is why he would have panic attacks at live shows. You can't stop, delete, and retake at a life performance. His Netflix special, "Inside, " also shows his precision. It shows clips of him working behind the scenes. I really hope him and his partner are doing well.

Something that I like about the ending is that there's not a stinger note at the end. I feel like most people have come to expect there to be one more note at the end, but Bo leaves this silence almost like dead air. Because people expect that stinger note that doesn't happen, it leaves more of that uneasy feeling that the song has been giving us the whole time.

I watched this before to listen to the song in general, but I never really thought about it. He is literally symbolizing to us the stages in which the internet hypnotizes you. First stage, just trying to convince you calmly with a few reasons. Second stage, showing you more stuff so you go back for more and more. Final stage… it’s far too late. You’ve been grasped in by the internet and now you are on it every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every month of every year for the rest of your life.

But neither of you guys are listening to the lyrics. That’s the important part. Not just the theatrics. It’s about how it’s made to get young kids addicted, and now that they are, there’s nothing they can do. It’s a part of their culture now. Being bored is now impossible, as they have technology since they were raised with an IPad. Hear the lyrics. The theatrics adds to it afterwords, and make it much more better to the viewer.
