As a slew of smash and grab robberies have plagued the San Francisco Bay area, some drivers are resorting to extreme measures to save their cars from shattered windows. Parisa Hemmat, owner of Grand Flowers in Oakland, California, left the back hatch of her SUV open to show would-be thieves that there’s nothing to take in the vehicle. San Francisco’s mayor is pushing back on accusations of being soft on crime, and took a stand, calling for more aggressive law enforcement.

"There's nothing in my car. Here, the door's open."

Thief: Takes the car

This happened to my grandpa a few days ago. He knew who the kid was and he went to the parents house and told them what he saw on his ring door camera. The mom dragged the 30-year-old son over to my grandpa‘s house and made him return all of the items he took from his car. I can only imagine seeing a 75-year-old woman dragging her adult son by the ear across the street.

I don’t understand why people want to make this world miserable to live in when we can make this great for everyone

what a time to live in...where we're trying to cooperate with criminals to avoid being hit on.

The mayor let it get to this point and now she wants to act tough.

What a joke.

The comparison to smash and grabs and dance flashmobs is hilarious.

Quick and easy way to stop this, put out a public announcement on popular news channels stating that if you’re caught doing a smash and grab, or even stealing in general, it’s a 5 year mandatory prison sentence…period. Regardless of the value of items stolen. I imagine that’ll stop a whole lot of it.

I’m not sure if reverse psychology is going to convince thieves to not steal your car. Might as well leave your keys out into the open.

I say at this point anyone should be able to hunt them.

The mayor’s tough talk is not enough. The laws need to be tough enough. Police need to be well resourced. The D.A. needs to stop reducing charges. Judges need to stop giving a million chances and going light on sentencing.

This is sad why can't people leave other people things alone. And enjoy life after this pandemic.

That isn't to "deter" thieves. They just don't want a broken window. They're gonna search the car regardless.

This is sad to see. I remember the first time I heard that in California or somewhere in cali, that theft was being labeled a small demeanor. Smh why in the world 🤦‍♀️

nothing valuable inside the car but the car instead is extremely valuable… how ironic

All is not lost.
The homelessness problem is about to be solved, when the homeless discover spacious vehicles purposefully left open by their owners.
What a time to be alive!

My 80 year old grandmother's car was just broken in to and trashed...such a giving and sweet lady, I was soooo mad for her! And can you believe she still offered the thieves grace, saying "they were probably in drugs baby, what a sad life they live"...God I love that woman, her heart is truly golden 💛

This is the same energy as leaving your wallet on the floot and circling it with paint. No one will touch it. There was an experiment like this. I think it's even better if you leave the valuables in the cars in plain view with all doors open since criminals will think it's a sting operation
