Today we're going to do a deep dive on "healthy whole grains". Are they really healthy?

You'll often hear that whole grains have 2 to 3 times more fiber than refined grains. The problem is that grains don't have a lot of fiber to begin with.

Even brown rice only has about 4% fiber. However, 1 cup of spinach has 50% fiber and only 4 g of carbs. It's important to get your fiber from vegetables, not grains.

Many people don't realize that products with whole grains often come with refined grains, refined sugar, and different chemicals. When whole grains are ground into flour for these products, they also lose nutrition just from this process.

80% of the grain in a flour-based product made with whole grains is starch and will spike your blood sugars. When starch is heated, ground, or processed, your digestive enzymes turn the so-called healthy complex carbohydrates into simple carbohydrates (glucose molecules).

The big problems with whole grains:
1. They're high on the glycemic index
This will:
• Affect your blood sugar
• Affect your mood
• Affect your cognitive function
• Cause weight gain
• Potentially lead to a fatty liver
• Spike your cholesterol

2. They're high in phytic acid (an anti-nutrient)
This will:
• Block various minerals

3. They contain gluten
This will:
• Cause gas, bloating, and inflammation
• Potentially cause SIBO
• Potentially increase your risk of developing allergies or Hashimoto's

4. Wheat contains glyphosate
This will:
• Affect your microbiome
• Potentially increase your risk of celiac disease

5. They're fortified with synthetic vitamins and iron
This will:
• Cause them to sit for longer in your gut
• Expose you to types of vitamins that the body is not designed to absorb

Even though a mere " thanks " doesn't really show how grateful I am and how much you've helped this world . Still, Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Dr.berg .

My name is Carol and I am addicted to watching your videos. I am 67 and so many of my friends and relatives are baffled at how I have been looking younger and losing weight. I started at 178 and am now in a size 6. Thanks Dr Berg! Wish I had known this information 30 plus years ago! You are a rock star 🌟

Some years ago, a nutritionist insisted that I needed whole grains in my diet, even when I tried to explain that I experienced a lot of issues with whole grains and actually did a lot better when I restricted their use in my diet. Even when I presented her with the research that existed regarding low carb and keto diets, she dismissed them saying they were fad diets. That was my last visit to her. I continued doing my own research on the internet and following a keto and intermittent fasting lifestyle and all my health metrics have dramatically improved. Thank you to channels - Dr Berg, Dr. Sten Ekberg and Thomas DeLauer.

For three weeks I have not had any gluten: bread, rice, cereal, and pasta. Also low sugar….My rheumatoid arthritis pain is gone, as is depression, and I have so much energy and brain fog is gone!! Yes, inflammation is a problem. I cannot believe the complete change I have experienced. Thank you Dr. Berg for your information

My dad is a very sharp, slim and healthy 92 year old who still drives, uses a computer, goes up and down the stairs in his home many times a day and spends as much time puttering in his garden as he can. His diet has only ever been mediterranean based with lots of olive oil, and with every meal he will have a piece of bread, total three a day, whether it's white(his favorite) or multi grain. The only supplement he has been taking for years now is fish krill, omega 3. Am I going to convince him to change to no bread or pasta now lol? No. His sister died recently (from a fall) at 95.5yrs, same diet. But processed and fastfood was never part of their life or ours.

Thank you for ALL the time and research you've put into finding out this vital information and explaining it to us. I have literally watched ALL your videos over the past 2 years since I discovered you were here and your information has been 1000 times more helpful to me and my health than all the medical doctors I pay big bucks to visit. I've struggled with Insulin Resistance my entire life (and I'm old !) but I only have known what it is that I'm dealing with the past few years. I've made progress but still struggle. I'm currently dealing with high blood pressure that I haven't been able to bring down very far with natural remedies, so the MD's started prescribing pills and I developed allergic reactions to ten of them...yes 10...and now am on the 11th drug, which is causing other issues but not lowering BP. To bring a long story to an end, I was at the ER today for extremely high BP and nobody knows what made it spike or return to a decent, although not normal, number today, but the hospital sent me away with literature telling me I should be eating 8 servings of whole grains, 5 fruits, 3 nonfat dairy items and 3 protein choices every day, but I should avoid fats and salt AND I was stunned to read "You don't have to deny yourself sweets. You can have one small slice of cake or pie, 2 or 3 cookies, one scoop of ice cream or one 1/2 cup of pudding five days of the week." Oh, and never go more than 3 hours without a snack because you'll get so hungry you will overeat. So basically they gave someone with Insulin Resistance and a borderline glucose level the instructions to become diabetic by tomorrow. With the rate of obesity in the country growing on these "balanced" diets, where is the disconnect that makes medical doctors continue to spread this awful info to patients?

Dr.berg, I use to eat a lot of bread, whole grain, everyday, I'm 54 years old, and I was wander why my bowel movements were almost Diarea . So I changed my diet, got rid of most of the bread. And now I'm pretty normal now, stiffer stool. So thank you for bringing this to all of us. I would have thought it was the bread and the nuts I was eating. Cheers from northern indiana usa

I’ve cut bread consumption but I won’t give up my steel cut oats lol 😂.I’ve lost weight over the years and in a healthy range, no big belly. For those who may be worried about phytic acid in oats, soak them overnight and rinse the next morning, this will optimise nutrient absorption from your toppings

Did the challenge. I'm fine. No issues. People have to realize that some things work for some people and not others.

Dear Eric, I will be 87 in May, and have basically eaten the same diet my mother started me with as a child. The only things that have gone wrong with me is that I started developing a smallish tummy about 10 years ago, and this year I developed arthritis which limits my ability for brisk walking and other activities. However, I have found that if I start to feel weary a slice of bread and butter picks me up quite well. I do not go overboard with carbs, but they do help me. On the brighter side I have several birds who have been hammering on my window in the morning for many years, and although they do not get over friendly, they do appreciate the fact that I serve them a few slice of bread chopped up in my kitchen whizz. Also they really appreciate breakfast oats. PS: I love your articles.

For years dietitians and doctors have been telling us “eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains”! Thats as far as that went, I never imagined that “healthy” is a lot more complex than that! I appreciate you going the extra step to define what healthy really means!

I quit smoking a few days ago. Not drinking for a few months either to detox. Went out last night with friends and had non alcoholic drinks at a bar. Drove home and considered fast food but remembered all I've learned on this channel. Went straight home instead and made a sandwich with all healthy ingredients. A handful of cashews too. Will be switching to pecans today as they're also tasty but have a better profile. It was delicious. I know carbs aren't particularly good for you but this was a huge step up for me. I feel really good this morning and just wanted to say "thank you".

Can you give us a guide on what to eat? Because most of the time, it's about what we should not eat and it's 90% of the food.
That type of video will be good, like perfect day of eating etc...
