Australian driver of 40 years here. More drama in each episode of this show than I saw in my entire career.

As a steam locomotive crew member, I can tell you right now, this was staged. They were slowing down and speeding up on purpose. A steam locomotive wont lose speed that quickly on a failed stoker because whatever is still burning is making a sufficient amount of pressure. The injector issue, no big deal because the engineer has another injector on his side.

As someone that works on the railway in Australia, this show makes me cringe so hard

This looks fake as fuck. I also know, if double track is run with two steam trains simultaneousl, it’s mainly done to allow the people to get a nice close up view of a running engine by, repeatedly overtaking one another.

Imagine flying Scotsman just came out of nowhere and joined the race

Imagine if someone would build one brand new specifically built for racing

"The R7" FFS put the crack pipe down, its an R class, specifically R 761. Don't think i could stand to watch an entire episode.

seemed rly cool until he started beating on it with a hammer. I get it, it's a race and the cameras are rolling, but being a steam engineer should come first and I don't think you're ever supposed to hammer on a fucking pressurized valve inside a steam locomotive but idk.

The cringe factor in this is off the charts.

Don't Australian locomotives have a second injector on the engineer's side?

Quest - why let the truth get in the way of a good story? (Well not that good!)

The only race I could consider successful was the 1980s 4449 and 8444 Race up Cajon pass. (Spoilers if you didn’t see it) Note: 4449 had a Hot bearing causing it to slow down. Both engines were oil fired

As a fireman on a couple of Swedish locomotives that have that exact same model of injector, I died of cringe watching this. If that were to really happen, you would never abuse it like that. It was so easy to tell that what he was doing was staged.

"Let's have a race, have a race, have a race
Let's see who is the quickest
Who can be the fastest
On your marks, now get set, go
Let's set a pace, set a pace, set a pace
Let's see if you can catch me
Let's see if you can match me so
Let's have a race, have a race"

What a load of crapp. Fake information to generate viewer excitement.

Stokers are not "Automatic"!; every steam locomotive has 2 forms of boiler feeding.

Not an expert, but steam locomotives ain't supposed to do that. This was definitely scripted...

Loved the R class when it visited South Australia.
