But Garner had one particular skill that set her apart from the competition when auditioning for the role of Ruth. A Missouri accent is a difficult thing to nail, but Garner already had previous experience in perfecting the southern pronunciation as she had already played a Missouri native in the movie ‘Tomato Red’. She even thought that her accent wouldn’t be what the casting directors were after, but luckily for Garner her pronunciation was spot on and she was duly cast in a role she made distinctly her own.
