South Africa Elections 2024 LIVE: ANC Says President Ramaphosa Won't Step Down For Any "Coalition"
South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party has stated that President Cyril Ramaphosa won't step down from his current role if the party forms a coalition government. This statement came after the African National Congress lost its majority in South Africa's elections after ruling for 30-years. Coalition talks with political counterparts, that were earlier underway, have reportedly reached a stalemate.
ANC lost the majority after winning roughly 41% of the votes, with 85% of the ballots counted. While the ANC will likely remain the largest political force after Wednesday's election, voters appeared to have punished the former liberation movement for years of economic decline which have left many in poverty.
South Africa will now have to enter a period of coalition building unprecedented in the democratic era, with potential partners ranging from the pro-business Democratic Alliance to insurgent parties led by former ANC figures who fell out with the party.
