South Africa Elections 2024 LIVE: South Africa Heads for Coalition as ANC Support Plunges

South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party was on its way to losing its majority after winning roughly 41% of the votes, with 85% of the ballots counted.
While the ANC looked likely to remain the largest political force after Wednesday's election, voters appeared to have punished the former liberation movement for years of economic decline which have left many in poverty.
South Africa will now have to enter a period of coalition building unprecedented in the democratic era, with potential partners ranging from the pro-business Democratic Alliance to insurgent parties led by former ANC figures who fell out with the party.
