JOHANNESBURG, NKANDLA, DURBAN AND MIDRAND, SOUTH AFRICA - South Africans head to the polls for general elections to elect a new National Assembly. South Africa heads to the polls on Wednesday, and the dominance of the ANC is expected to wane. The issues facing the country are many and remain systemic. They include widespread blackouts, high unemployment, political corruption and shocking crime statistics.

On May 29, South Africans head to the polls. After 30 years of dominance, the ANC faces its toughest election yet, needing 50 percent to maintain its majority. It will be the country’s seventh democratic general election since apartheid ended in 1994 when Nelson Mandela was elected president with the ANC winning 62.5 percent of the 400 seats in the National Assembly.
Four of the biggest players to watch out for in this year’s election are the ANC, the DA, the MK and the EFF. The main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) has signed a pact with 10 other parties, agreeing to form a coalition government if they get enough votes to dislodge the ANC from power.
The IEC says it will announce the election results on Sunday, June 2.
