I think Adam Savage showcase one of those quite a while back and they sent to him a clear acrylic version of this and explained how it works. It’s quite ingenious the way they “fool” the people seeing it into thinking it’s an actual thing and not a cleverly designed device. A friend of mine that is a physics teacher bought one (we, some of his students parents and my former fiancé pinched some money so he could get it for his classes and the first commercial design had a slight buzzing noise that people like me that have overly sensitive hearing aids could hear whenever the electro magnet turned briefly on. It’s a really cool toy to play with and a very interesting study in design.

This is actually the first explanation of why a perpetual motion machine won't work other than just "because it's impossible." Objects in motion required energy and if you took away some energy from the object in motion it would have less energy than it started with which would limit the motion. You can't have perpetual motion because you can't have perpetual energy
