This building of Hagia Sofia been a church for nine hundred years, a mosque for five centuries, a museum for 85 years and now once again this building has been given the status of a mosque. The AyaSofya mosque has been opened for the worshipers. The building was erected as a church in 537 AD and is one of the Byzantine architectural masterpieces. It was first used as an Eastern Orthodox Church.
Then in 1204 the Crusaders converted it into the Roman Catholic Church. In 1261 it was rebuilt by the Orthodox Church. Then, when the Sultan Muhammad Fateh (Ottomans) conquered Istanbul in 1453, the building was converted into a mosque.
After the conquest of Istanbul, there was no immediate place for Muslims to pray and gather, so the Sultan decided to turn this historic religious center of the Orthodox Church into a mosque. So the Sultan bought the building and the surrounding land from his personal property and paid the full price to the monks of the church. He paid out of his own pocket, and the building and the land were converted into a mosque. Documents of sale and purchase are still available in the Turkish capital, Ankara.
The Hagia ayasofya building been a mosque and a place of worship for Muslims for 500 years after the conquest of Constantinople? But after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, when Mustafa Kamal Ataturk became the head of Turkey, he closed the mosque in 1934 and turned it into a museum. Some Turkish muslims started the movement for restoration but they could not succeed in it.

In 1994, when Tayyib Erdogan was running for mayor of Istanbul, election, he promised to open the building for prayers.

However, on July 10, 2020, the Supreme Court of Turkey, the Council of State, overturned a court order issued in 1934 during the regime of Kamal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, to turn the mosque into a museum. Officially issued an order to convert it into a mosque again. On July 24, 2020, regular Friday prayers were offered in Ayasofya Mosque .
