Hagia Sophia officially the Hagia Sophia Holy Grand Mosque and formerly the Church of Hagia Sophia, is a Late Antique place of worship in Istanbul, designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. Built in 537 as the patriarchal cathedral of the imperial capital of Constantinople, it was the largest Christian church of the eastern Roman Empire (the Byzantine Empire) and the Eastern Orthodox Church, except during the Latin Empire from 1204 to 1261, when it became the city's Latin Catholic cathedral. In 1453, after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. In 1935, the secular Turkish Republic established it as a museum. In 2020, it controversially re-opened as a mosque.

This is the most magnificent tourist site in all of muslim Turkey. It was built by Orthodox Christians between 532 and 537 AD. Its designers were Anthemos and Isidoris, two Greek mathematicians/geometers.

It would take me a couple hours to even get inside as I would just stare and marvel at every doorway and pillar.

Simply beautiful. Regardless of the fact that this was a Cathedral in the Roman Empire under emperor Justinian's rule, when Istanbul was called Constantinople and the Hagia Sophia was built as a Cathedral for the Eastern Orthodox Christians. The builders were Anthimius and Isidore. Many years later, the Ottomans stripped down many artworks of this Cathedral to cater to the Muslims. Anyways, point being lets look at it as a beautiful structure from ancient times that brings people together vs finding differences between religions. Amen and Peace ✌

To me it looks more like a crowded airport hall. It has supreme and sublime beauty, but tourists destroy all the sacred atmosphere of this place. They chat, and sit on the floor, make noise that shows little respect to this sacred place on their behalf. I would impose silence as a basic rule for being let in. Reverence and silence.

Unto you, O Theotokos, invincible Champion, your City, in thanksgiving ascribes the victory for the deliverance from sufferings. And having your might unassailable, free us from all dangers, so that we may cry unto you: Rejoice, O Bride Ever-Virgin. The Archangel was sent from Heaven to cry 'Rejoice!'

To all haters whose little delicate feelings were hurt by Erdogan’s decision, at 1:34 a portrait of Jesus is clearly at the entrance of the church turned mosque.

You have to visit this live. No amount of camera work will prepare you for the grandeur of staring at the dome in person.

Almost everything worth visiting in Turkey was made by Greeks, this is not just a beautiful church, it's history standing up, big and proud
