BMG Direct Drive for Ender 3

I designed a new X-axis mounting plate which accomplished several goals.

1. Mounts the V6 hotend directly in the BMG extruder

2. Puts the stepper motor directly over the x-axis rail for better center of gravity

3. Stepper motor clears the Z-axis rails so there is no loss in X movement

4. Uses a modified Petsfang for cooling. Hopefully we can get Dave Petsel’s interest in developing a Petsfang specifically for this mount (The license doesn’t allow for distributing mods).

5. Lightweight

Using the same motor, extruder and hotend, my stringing tests are all great now. Using the Petsfang mount for the BMG with the gap in the middle I could not ever get rid of stringing.

This uses OpenBuild’s mini v-wheels to accomplish this. I am also using the stock E3D fan and mount for the hotend cooling.

All, I know this is 2 years later but I will offer my apologies. 2 years ago my life went upside down. I ended up leaving my home town to take a job elsewhere and getting divorced at the same time. Then I met someone, married and had twins. All this time my printers sat in storage. :(

However, I am back in the game! I pulled out my Ender and had to reprint the parts, as my PLA print (it was just for prototyping after all) melted. I'm up and running again with this but have noticed some changes I want to make. I'm almost done building a new BLV MGN Cube so that is taking my time right now, but I will soon work on this a little more and then I'll post the STL's and STEP files.

why the hell you post a video like this and dont provide a link to STL?!

This looks really interesting - I am planning a similar design for my printer - hotend and extruder are due some time next week! Great idea with the smaller V slot wheels to drop the motor down a bit. Can I ask - did you print the X carriage/plate for this design? I'm planning to use PETG for a replacement plate rather than use the metal one that the printer ships with but can't find any examples of people having done this before. I'm assuming it is fine - and surely lighter. Cheers :)

*edit* aha! never mind, I didn't think to check the other videos on your channel. Looks great!

Just picked up one of these extruders and am already running a petsfang duct; do you have the STL for the extruder mount and/or duct available anywhere for download?
