Very insightful. I am inclined to agree that 'intelligence' has a platonic existence in the sense that one could write down a abstract description of what it would take to be an effective observer/intelligence which would be true in any universe. For example, the axioms might include:
- detects key features of its own environment
- detects key features of its own internal states
- has goals relevant to its own survival / continuity
- has a (mental) model of itself and its environment
- is substantiated in structures shaped over (long periods of) time by evolutionary forces
- is recursive (i.e. intelligence is made up of large number of sub-intelligences - all intelligence is collective intelligence).

Dr. Levin is easily my favorite institutional academic, by leaps and bounds. His research gives credence to many other brilliant men, some dead some still alive, who have been ridiculed for years by mainstream academia due to their ideas not conforming with the status quo of materialist thought.

I hope and pray that Dr. Levin will continue to have a productive, and long life, so that he can continue to break the paradigm that holds us back from conscious and material evolution.

I'm always fascinated by Dr. Levin's talks. From a physics/biology level I get that we are constantly changing. But one thing that fascinates me as I get older is how the people I know, no matter how much they change in physical form, always somehow stay in some essential way very much the same. Have you ever met someone you haven't seen for 30 years and been astonished to find they are still that same kid you went to high school with? They look different, less hair, bigger belly, whatever, but there's some fundamental thing that's still them. I had this experience really emphatically a few years when my new boss walked into the room for the first time, he happened to be a person I had never met before in person, but I had known him intimately because he was the child star of a TV show I watched. So I knew this person as a cute 6 -10 year old on black and white TV and then met him as a 65 year old man in person and it was BOOM - same human. It was mind blowing. A huge epiphany. I'd love to know how Michael Levin would explain this from his perspective. I don't have any better term for it than a soul.
