Human bodies aren’t built for extreme aging: our capacity is set at about 90 years. But what does aging really mean, and how does it counteract the body’s efforts to stay alive? Monica Menesini details the nine physiological traits that play a central role in aging.

I swear to god, there's a TED-Ed video for every single question that I've ever had.

Watching this video made me sad. It reminds me of my mom when I was young she used to be in charge, she was your everyday strict asian mom, she taught me discipline, she was in control. Now I look at her and she turned into a jolly old woman and recently started forgetting things. It pains me to see someone who was a powerhouse loose her skills as years go by. She still has her wisdom but I'm scared of seeing her turn into a helpless old woman. Its like watching her slowly die before my eyes and I can't do anything about it.

I remember my biology teacher in HS saying aging is kind of like you having a VHS and making a copy of it, then making another VHS copy off the first copied VHS, then making yet another copy off the second copied VHS, etc.

The quality will get shittier shittier and that's kind of what your cells do as the regeneration process gets poorer and poorer. I think that's what they're talking about at 3:50.

Taking care of yourself and exercising on a regular basis is the most important thing for your well-being.
I take care of myself for myself and so my family doesn’t have to worry about me in the future.

Getting old is probably the most cruel thing to ever happen to you. It’s worse than losing your love, family member are going broke.

This tells HOW we age. Not why. I thought this video was going to talk about the reasons why nature ages and why some things don't "like the immortal jellyfish, some bacteria, and plants which can die and revive themselves." Why do humans simply die, when other organism live centuries, nay, forever, unless killed by an outside source. Still a good vid though, but I'd change the title.

Without that little voice in your head, you wouldn't be able to read this.

If I could live to 120 and my body stopped aging at 23 I would be so happy. I miss my young body 😭😭😭

Once I was studying the brain processes and my professor was talking about Alzheimer's disease and explaining why it's more likely to happen when we age and at the end of the explanation he said, with a kind of weird, gray and at the same time lovely glance at the board (he loved teaching): "it is like if our bodies were programmed to die...". I twas like if he was just thinking out lout. One day I'll probably forget the lecture but I don't think I'll never forget that moment

There are some really fascinating case studies about communities in Okinawa, Japan and Sardinia, Italy (the two world communities with the oldest average ages) regarding diet, lifestyle etc. for those interested in potential contributors to longevity...
