On March 14, President John F. Kennedy's body was moved to a new spot just a few feet from its original resting place at Arlington National Cemetery. Despite never specifying his burial location, JFK's family and friends assumed he would choose Massachusetts. However, due to his status as a World War II veteran and president, he was buried at Arlington. Jacqueline Kennedy, his widow, chose the final site after visiting it and agreeing that JFK "belongs to the people."

During funeral preparations, Jacqueline requested an eternal flame be erected at the gravesite. A makeshift flame was quickly assembled and lit by Jackie after the military ceremony. Over time, the original site attracted millions of visitors, leading to the decision to move JFK's grave to a safer location nearby.

The new site, completed in 1967, included upgrades such as a stable eternal flame and improved accommodations for visitors. JFK's body was secretly moved in a private ceremony attended by Jackie, his brothers, and President Lyndon Johnson. The Kennedy family covered the costs of the original burial, while the federal government funded the construction and maintenance of the final site.

Senator Robert F. Kennedy was later buried near his brother, and when Jacqueline Kennedy passed away in 1994, she was laid to rest beside JFK. Senator Ted Kennedy was also interred near his brothers upon his death in 2009. William Taft is the only other president buried at Arlington besides JFK.

Oh how I wish JFK lived long enough to finish at least his 1st 4 year term. I have no doubt that there would have been a 2nd. Possibly, like FDR a 3rd. He would have done so many Wonderful Things for America!! RIP JFK!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👼👼😎😎🙏🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Jackie wasn’t on hand the night the bodies of her children and husband were moved to the new location. She visited the new graves the next day.

You know me, my wife and daughter took a little vacation to DC and it was the first time id ever taken a vacation and it was worth it and we swung by Arlington on our way home and when we went up to see JFK there were a few other people standing with us but when they walked off it was just my family left and it kinda hot me and I told my wife "You know right now we are the only ones in the United States that are at JFKs gravesite". I know kinda dumb but I thought it was profound st the moment.
