In 2018 the pass rate for the multiple choice questions on the DVSA ADI Part 1 was 75.98%, so a pretty decent pass rate compared to the learner theory test which only had a 53.07% pass rate for the multiple choice questions.

I think this shows the hard work PDI's (Potential Driving Instructor's) put into their revision and their motivation to not only learn the question, but to really understand the material so they can pass it on to their future learners.

However, can we increase that pass rate further? One topic which can catch out PDI's is questions on instructional techniques, as it typically is a foreign topic unlike most of the other topics.

In todays video I show you 15 practice ADI Part 1 questions based on instructional techniques. As well as giving you the answers I also show you the official DVSA explanation plus extra tips from myself, an Approved Driving Instructor for over 8 years.

IMPORTANT - Many people make the mistake of only relying on the apps / software to revise for the part 1, they then end up failing due to 'unexpected questions'. The apps / software have always only had practice questions on them, they have never had all the same questions on the real test.

As you a training to be a professional driving instructor you need to also buy a copy of:


You should know these books like the back of your hand, highlight key points, write notes etc etc. The information in these books is then what you should be doing in your own driving, and in tern what you should be teaching your learners in the near future.

If you know the books well you should straight away know the answer to things like:

In what 3 scenarios can you overtake on the left?
You should park at least how far from a junction?
When is it illegal to park on the right?
What is the difference between disc and drum brakes, and what are the advantages / disadvantages of each?

This mock is copied from a CD but in real ADI part 1 tests very trick questions are being asked and I haven’t seen those type of questions anywhere in any mock test. Therefore must understand and learn by heart UK HIGHWAY CODE .

I’ve failed my theory twice. With 85 and with an 89. What am I doing wrong?

i get some question on theory test adi part 1 really canfuse, when your pupil is going reverse what did you do? like you see your both side or only left or right shoulder, another one was what is learning plateau ? didnt remmber the answers, one more was dual brake system question? also if your pupil need interpreter who coulde be the answer was any more then 16 or dvsa will provide you one or age 14 and one more when you driving your pupil you get in collision who will proceed further the instructor or the pupil ? and the last one i remmber you giving lessons in group and 2 of them like messing around what shoud you do like quit giving lessons in group or throw that 2 pupils or enforce lesson something like that i try my best to explain even the questions and answer wasnt this way exactly hope you can clear me some of them really thank full of your videos

I failed part 1 adi theory test twice just one mark below on band 2, There was unexpected questions, I have bought advsa subscription kit for study and the davsa dvd, can you please advise me what to read to improve on band 2? I could not find anything else more than the kit I have.
