How to pass the ADI part 2 driving test | Redhill driving test

In this video I explain how the ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) Part 2 test works, the part 2 is to test you ability to drive to a high standard so you can then pass on these skills to your learners. The footage was filmed in Redhill which is one of the part 2 test centres in the south, the other being Guildford test centre.

Format of the test:
- Lasts 1 hour
- 2 reversing manoeuvres (forward bay park, reverse bay park, parallel park, pull up on the right and reverse 2 car lengths)
- possibly an emergency stop (1/3 tests)
- 20 minutes of independent driving (4/5 test follow sat nav, 1/5 test follow road signs).

To pass you are allowed no more than 6 driver faults and no serious or dangerous faults.

You only have 3 attempts to pass, so make sure you are 100% ready before attempting it, so make sure you know the required standard and being able to drive to it consistently.

The ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) part 2 test requires a high standard of driving, and as such a concrete knowledge of the 'rules' and procedures in the Highway Code, Driving: The Essential Skills and Know Your Traffic Signs. The theory of this should have all be revised when taking your part 1 test.

Remember, you are not looking to drive like a learner to how your instructor taught you 30 years ago, you need to drive like an experienced driver demonstrating that concrete knowledge of all the DVSA publications listed above.

When I was told to pull up on my test I found some of the areas I was told to pull up over were quite sudden and not an area I would have stopped at. Hi, I love your videos. Love the way you explain things. Keeping it simple and straight forward. I’ve my part 2 exam coming up soon. The only thing which I’m not feeling really at ease is following the road signs. I think I will be too much focusing on the road/speed/ lane discipline/gap from front car that I may miss road signs. I know it’s not a major in L test but is it a problem in adi 2 test if you keep on missing signs on independent driving. Love for you to make a video on that! Thanks

A good instructional video. At 5:43 it appears that the vehicle is travelling a bit too quick past lines of parked cars. If little Johnny, who is too short to be seen, chases his escapee ball out into the road(I was that boy once) - it appears doubtful you could stop in time, just based purely on the speed things appear to be going by in the camera. Part 2 ADI exam. No1 driving rule. Always driving at a speed where you are able to STOP in the distance you can see to be clear ahead - AND TO THE SIDES (BOTH SIDES). People completely forget that less obvious hidden zone masked by obstructions. It has saved me an accident countless times in 40 years driving. Hope this helps someone and saves lives - like mine was saved by an alert driver when I was 9 or 10 years old.

If its safe Do you have to fully stop before you forward parking or you can park slowly with observation forward in a bay?

I think Signal should be standard even when nobody is around so that its a natural thing... also what if you didnt see anyone and by signalling that person stays well safe behind the vehicle.

quick couple of questions: what about electronic handbrakes? and what about the use of parking cameras? my car has 4 and gives 360 view when manoeuvering. im a hgv and psv licence holder and previously an adi(before such technology) I was expected in my hgv test to make use of cameras, where do pdi's stand if their vehicle has them?

On the first pull up on the left. You didn't signal because no one would benefit from your signal. If you were to signal after doing your mirror checks. Will this count against you ?

during pulling up on the left you say don't worry if you block the driveway. my understanding was obstructing or partially obstructing the driveway was going to do you no favours?
