I appreciate your thorough treatment of this. When I was a Protestant, James 2 was just too clear and unmistakable for me to ignore. No matter how hard I tried, no commentary could justify the ridiculous idea that James was saying the exact opposite of what he clearly stated then went on to explain in detail.

I just bought your book and it looks great! Thanks for all you do for Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I´m looking forward to your new book on Orthodoxy. Best wishes from Slovakia. In Christ, Byzantine Catholic Pavol

That you for your work Erick! I have a Evangelical friend who asked me on my take on works in relation to Salvation. I went on to tell him about Pelagianism and its partial counterpart and explained that it is defined by the Church as a heresy, in the same Council (Trent) often quoted by the Evangelical side on the "Pelagian" misrepresentation of the Catholic position. That helped him a lot in progressing in the discussion.

Hi Erick, Protestant here. Would appreciate if you also upload your content in Google Podcasts. In that way listening to 3x speed with trimmed silence will be possible.

Just purchased your book today. This is a topic I’ve recently become super interested in!

I look forward to getting your book. I too have been reading up on this topic since I was an Evangelical. During my time as an Evangelical I studied up on this. Those Biblical verses in St. Paul were so stubborn in confronting my belief in the Protestant doctrine of Justification. Eventually I became Catholic.

Do you interact with Alister McGrath’s Iustitia Dei? What do you make of Robert Sungenis’ Not by Faith Alone?

Also, do you discuss the Norman Shepherd controversy over at Westminster in the 70s? And one final thing. The fairly recent controversy of the The Federal Vision is showing that some Protestants are no longer looking to this forensic aspect of Justification as the model. They just don’t see the Biblical and historical basis as even McGrath acknowledges.

Blessings.

Erick, great video! I appreciate your content. Thank you. My name is Jordan Orick. I'm a pastor (but I call myself "half-tholic"). I have a YouTube channel called "New Creation Theology w/ Jordan Orick" and I'd love to interview/dialogue with you some time. Blessings!

There is a new book by Lutheran Dr. Jack Kilcrease "Justification By the Word: Restoring Sola Fide" Lexham Academic Press. You might be interested in reading it.

The problem is that the Protestants with which we interact most often do in fact believe that grace is a free gift which depends on faith (orthodox belief and trust) alone. This is because evangelicals are the majority and mainline groups are declining

An antinomian made a point I agreed with--Lordship salvation is pretty much justification by faith and works, in the same way miaphysitism is the same as duophysitism just worded poorly

Ybarra FUNDAMENTALLY misunderstands the Protestant notion of faith. He sees Abraham’s faith as a “God-pleasing virtue reorienting Abraham’s relationship to God.” So do we. The difference—if there is one—is that we see this “God-pleasing virtue” as entirely God given. THAT’S why we speak of it as an empty hand. WE had nothing to do with it! (And Catholics tend to give a grudging acceptance to the notion of Sola Gratia…which means Ybarra’s beliefs may even be compatible with Protestantism.

(Most rank-and-file Protestants do not believe in Justification by Faith Alone. Most rank-and-file Catholics are fully on board with Justification by Faith AND Works. Ybarra is just speaking of “official” Protestantism and “official” Catholicism.)

Ybarra, here, states the Protestant stance…and then IMMEDIATELY forgets it!

Faith, for the Protestant, is first and foremost “trust” rather than mere belief…and clearly includes “faithfulness.” Ybarra keys too much into the forensic nature of justification for Protestants. We also speak of Union with Christ as the ground of justification. Transformation is MORE a part of the Protestant paradigm than it is of the Catholic.
