The TRUTH about the Cheapest car rental on Oahu (Lucky Owl)

In this episode we check out an independent car rental establishment in Oahu. Even though a car isn’t needed in Waikiki, we wanted to get our of Honolulu and see more of the island, so we decided to try to save some money with Lucky Owl. Check out the video to see how that experiment went.

Lucky Owl was a life saver during our trips & we didn't stand out as tourists do in newer car rentals; we just blended in with the locals cars... They've also gladly recommended another affordable & reliable company on the Big Island when we asked...

Great tips on idea on looking beyond the big name rental companies. You're spot on with the lack of inventory as I looked into renting a car for a proposed trip and the prices for a week were out of this world high. Higher than I've seen them in a long time.

I have a reservation for Oahu and Maui and booked in September 2020 for this July 2021. paying $231 for Oahu -5 days and $277 for Maui 4 days

FYI from late March 2021 and still going on. HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Rental cars are a hot commodity in Honolulu. If you can reserve one ― and that’s not guaranteed ― prepare to pay top dollar.

I was just quoted $1000 for 6/27-7/2.
What doesn't make sense is this is what regular rental car agencies are changing for NEW cars and I'm actually finding them for $557 through 3rd party sites. Thanks for the information anyway, I was surly hoping this would work out for us too.🙂

Wow! That pricing is fantastic. We have noticed that car rental places in Hawaii do not turnover their fleets as often as the mainland so it’s likely you’d have a similar make and model selection from the “big boys”...but four times the price as you noted! Completely agree on the car rental insurance through your card, but also be aware of “loss of use” damages. If you wreck a rental and they have to take it out of use, you can be charged for all the days it takes to ship parts to Hawaii plus shop time for repairs. Mainland we never get loss of use coverage but we do in Hawaii. Just something to consider!

We hit something in the road on Kauai! It cut two tires, obviously we had only one spare. We were on the side of the road watching YouTube videos to figure out how to lower the spare under a Hyundai Santa Fe, then had to stop for air in the other tire limping it back to the airport. We were watching the pressure gauges on dash praying all the way to Lihue!

That can be a problem with smaller car hire companies and unlike the bigger multinational hire firms check over the car before it is rehired out and have set age limits on cars plus do any maintenance

They charged me 55 for one day, I put my card in for the payment. Then I check my account and an extra 200 is gone for a “hold”. No one explained it to me. So I asked when the funds would return and they said 7-10 business days 😒

That sucks you had to deal with tire issues SO MANY TIMES on vacation! I would rather pay more money for a car that is inspected first.

Actually, roads aren't that bad compared with the mainland. There are potholes, but in my opinion, maybe only a little worse. Hope the car rental guy wasn't using that to make excuses. Sorry for you car adventures. Not fun.
