No doubt conferring good air to ground capabilities for iaf mig-29 upg is an welcome step indeed, but even more important is conferring iaf-mig-29upg with aesa radar as well more longer /lethal air to air missiles like astra-1/2 because mig-29 were principally designed for air superiority and that is were aesa radar as well as more advanced air to air missiles would be needed to maintain iaf-mig-29 upg's edges over it's regional adversaries.

Given the delays in Tejas mk-2 & AMCA (even if we start working in mission mode, we cannot resolve engine dependency in short to medium term), it’s a great idea to upgrade MiG 29’s especially with Indian radar & mission computers. We should also drop the MRFA charade and simply order Rafael's with latest tech upgrades, since buying any other fighter makes no sense at this point. Hopefully, with such a large order we should be able to negotiate manufacturing and MRO in India, enhancing our self reliance and ecosystem.

This is the reason I was thinking that RD33MK is the perfect replacement of GR F404 for Tejas MK1As. The earlier issue of smoke problem, technical glitches and higher maintenance has more or less been ironed out.

Upgrading Mig29, & Mirage 2k is akin to putting lipstick on a pig. Alpha Defense said that these fighter jets are to be used in attack mode. In the BVR warfare Mirage 2k' is powered by MICA which has a range of 60-80 km. Mig 29 is a completely different story, it's a soviet era design and doesn't have fly-by-wire, in the BVR range the R27T has a range of 63 km. In addition, their combat prowess has been seen in the Russia-Ukraine war. Most of the Ukrainian Mig 29 are history, Russia uses them sporadically.
Bottom line: Mirage may be useful but it's super expensive to upgrade, Mig 29 belongs to the junkyard. In a real war with a modern Air Force, both are liability. India would do well to cut their losses and not upgrade these fighter jets which are clearly on their last legs.
