Trunks has spent his whole life concerned with what others think of him. Whether its vegeta calling him weak or cell calling him a newbie, trunks’s convictions would be smashed the moment anyone criticized him. The only time he stood up to vegeta was only because he feared cell’s final form more than vegeta. The guy never had any self worth and this was never resolved in dbz. Now, seeing black and zamasu calling him evil finally made him realize he needs to stop giving a shit about what other people call him. He finally realized that people will always call him weak or evil or whatever else and its up to him to stand firm in his convictions and fight for what he believes in regardless of what anyone says. Thats how he unlocked his potential

I don't think people understand how powerful this part actually is... He lost the z fighters his family and his teacher his mom and let's keep in mind this is the real dbz timeline when they all are supposed to be dead I can only imagine how much rage he's kept pinned up even during the cell games
