My knock-out story: I’m at my gym and Im just bored, walking around thinking I’m a hot shot. I’ve sparred most everybody in my gym, except this one jolly fellow, DJ. He’s the biggest hitter at our gym, and is known for his one punch knockouts in the golden gloves. He’s the kind that throws a left hook at the bag and you can hear it upstairs and probably in the retirement home down the street. Me thinking I’m hot shit, I decide to spar him. All I say to him before we spar is “DJ please don’t kill me.” I had worked with him at a crazy house for troubled kids in the past so he had no true intention of hurting me, the guy honestly has a great heart. Fast forward to me being in the ring with him, Im just popping jabs and circling around, and eventually I throw a 2. I remember getting hit with a blunt force that sent me from reality to an acid trip in an instant. I’m talking kaleidoscope vision, earthquake in my head, loudest ringing I’ve ever heard. I proceed (accord to witnesses) to try and continue to stand, but I end up falling face first on the ground with my hands still in boxing position. I don’t remember the next hour of my life. I slowly fade back into existence and I’m sitting on the edge of the ring while everyone is doing their thing. Life is a complete haze. I do remember questioning a lot of my recent decisions in life. It honestly gave me a new perspective on a lot of things. One of my first thoughts “why the hell would I ever spar DJ” I was 150 at the time, so it didn’t even make sense because he was a heavyweight. Later that day I proceeded to go to work as a med pass (Im a CNA) None of my residents got the wrong meds, probably not the greatest decision to go into work. Anyway…. since then I’ve focused on my head movement much more 😂 I’ve talked with DJ since, he said he wasn’t trying to do it, and he’s a really humble, quiet dude. I truly believe him, and we still talk from time to time at the gym 🙂

This is part of the reason I think using pool noodles like canelos team does is a great idea, a way to work well on head movement and defense without the risk of taking micro concussions in training or legitimate concussions.

My friend got sucker punched into last week. He woke up like "Damn dude, that hurt. Let's go to bed we have that wakeboard thing in the morning". Bro...we already did that a week ago... He didn't believe me that entire night.

At my boxing gym, I haven’t yet sparred. I’ve been training for about 4 months now and my coaches will have me starting sparring in the new year. They take it very seriously at this gym and make it a point to make sure that boxers have a solid foundation and proven discipline BEFORE getting in the ring. Having said that, my question is, given this and the fact that I’ll be wearing headgear, how at risk am I for brain damage if I just want to spar but not compete (at least for now)? I work as a software developer so I really do need my brain to be on point, but I also really love the sport of boxing and feel as though sparring really gives me an opportunity to test my skills and learn much more. Thanks Sarah!

Love the boxing specific health and injury content. Very difficult to find data on this stuff and not many people are educated about it. Would love something on rotator cuff and shoulder issues for boxers too. Good content!

Absolutely fascinating video nurse Sarah and kind of terrifying! My wife is a nurse at a boarding school and the head trauma/concussion from rugby games terrifies her!! 😬

Yep. Been knocked. Messing with somebody I shouldn’t have. Got over confident, woke up on the floor. Humbling experience. Lol. Him and I are good friends to this day FYI.

Years ago I did this dumb sparing with a friend who had 12oz gloves only, 15 minute round and then lights out. I can recall only first few minutes of the fight. After I woke up, we apparently went to outside boulder wall, I climbed it and sit up on top - and only there, my first blurred memories after the KO start. I don't remember how I got down, or how I got back to the dorms. I also forgot whether or not I am dating a girl I was with for about a month at that time. Didn't see a doctor, recovered after about 3 days, head hurt for a good week though. Fun times.

Oh my gosh, your starting to get do many views! So happy for you. If your family ever wants to vacation in Florida, we have a whole upstairs your could stay in. After all my years of kickboxing, if I had it to do over again, I probably would not. Not just my brain, but my body parts. Blessings!

I've experienced some of these symptoms 2 years ago during sparring. I wasn't punched, instead I was KICKED to the head which gave me a flash knockdown (experiencing lights out for like 2 to 5 seconds). Luckily my symptoms weren't too severe besides facial bruising and a slight headache. The worst symptom I experienced was short term memory for a month. Scary stuff.

I spar..but We always agree to avoid hard head shots. Sometimes it happens accidentally 😉 but I've promised myself that if I ever start getting hit a lot I will no longer spar. I love boxing for many reasons but I am careful and determined to avoid getting KO'd (one reason I work on defense so much).

I have been "dazed" a couple times but the worst ones happened when I was a kid playing football🤣

I really like the sport and want to start boxing, but my main concern is about the risks of brain damage when sparring.
I know it's less risky than a professional fight, but it would be very helpful to hear from a medicine professional, could you talk a little bit about that topic on a concussion video? Thanks!

just passed out after a choke (bjj), a few blackouts after a few boxing blows (boxe)... yes and a nervous system totally out of control after a hundred kilos guy pushes on my neck which was already quite damaged (bjj)... that's impressive your body has spasms, tunnel effects, suffocating feeling especially when you have an insight feeling who say "its over"... but no ko on my side
play safe for yourself and your partner
