How to Make the Most Amazing German Chocolate Cake!

Fun fact: German's chocolate cake was invented by a guy with the last name German who worked for Bakers brand chocolate. He made a "Dark chocolate" with a very low cocoa percentage that Bakers started selling as German's chocolate and it is the traditional chocolate to use in German's chocolate cake.

My Mother used to make German Chocolate cakes fairly often doubling the icing recipe and covering the cake completely. As a teenager I didn’t like nuts, but loved the cake and icing minus the nuts which I got rid of (sorry for this, but I was 13) by sucking the icing off the pecans and putting them on the side of the plate. My Mother saw me doing that and told me I couldn’t have anymore cake if I was going to waste the pecans, and low and behold right there in that moment I learned to love pecans. 😂 So we used to have a Marie Callender’s
Restaurant in the town I lived in Southern California, the food was really very good, but the pies were heavenly, and they made German
Chocolate Pies. I tried many times through the years to duplicate that pie, but I wasn’t successful until it dawned on me to use my
Mother’s recipe for chocolate cream pie, then add pecans, coconut and top it off with meringue. It is heavenly! I hope you’ll try it! 😊

It is very favorite frosting and my mama would surprise me with a fresh cake when I got home from high school. She toasted it under the broiler after frosting the cake. Makes it taste so much better!

Homemade German chocolate frosting is a thousand times better than store bought frosting. It doesn’t have that sticky sugary taste. It just tastes fabulous
