✅Ingredients

THE MOST AMAZING CHOCOLATE CAKE:
• butter and flour for coating and dusting the cake pan
• 3 cups all-purpose flour
• 3 cups granulated sugar
• 1½ cups unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1 tablespoon baking soda
• 1½ teaspoons baking powder
• 1½ teaspoons salt
• 4 large eggs
• 1½ cups buttermilk
• 1½ cups warm water
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

CHOCOLATE CREAM CHEESE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING:
• 1½ cups butter softened
• 8 oz cream cheese softened
• 1½ cups unsweetened cocoa powder
• 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 7-8 cups powdered sugar
• about 1/4 cup milk as needed

✅Instructions

1️⃣ 00:00:19 - Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter three 9-inch cake rounds. Dust with flour and tap out the excess.

2️⃣ 00:00:29 - Mix together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a stand mixer using a low speed until combined.

3️⃣ 00:01:28 - Add eggs, buttermilk, warm water, oil, and vanilla. Beat on a medium speed until smooth. This should take just a couple of minutes.

4️⃣ 00:02:11 - Divide batter among the three pans. I found that it took just over 3 cups of the batter to divide it evenly.

5️⃣ 00:02:37 - Bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

6️⃣ 00:04:03 - Cool on wire racks for 15 minutes and then turn out the cakes onto the racks and allow to cool completely.

7️⃣ 00:04:21 - Frost with your favorite frosting and enjoy!

CHOCOLATE CREAM CHEESE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING:
1️⃣ 00:02:48 - In a large bowl, beat together butter and cream cheese until fluffy. Use a hand mixer or stand mixer for best results

2️⃣ 00:03:13 - Add in cocoa powder and vanilla extract. Beat until combined.

3️⃣ 00:03:26 - Beat in powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time. Add milk as necessary to make a spreadable consistency. The frosting should be very thick and will thicken even more if refrigerated.

⚠️⚠️⚠️METRIC MEASUREMENTS⚠️⚠️⚠️

✅Ingredients

• 450 grams all-purpose flour
• 650 grams granulated sugar
• 155 grams unsweetened cocoa powder
• 17 grams baking soda
• 8 grams baking powder
• 11 grams salt
• 4 large eggs
• 350 ml buttermilk
• 350 ml warm water
• 115 ml vegetable oil
• 10 ml vanilla extract

✅METRIC Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat oven to 176 degrees Celsius. Butter three 23 centimeter cake rounds. Dust with flour and tap out the excess.

2️⃣ Mix together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a stand mixer using a low speed until combined.

3️⃣ Add eggs, buttermilk, warm water, oil, and vanilla. Beat on a medium speed until smooth. This should take just a couple of minutes.

I've been using this recipe (1/2 measurements, enough for 8/10 people) for years and people love it. I really like how the tanginess of the cheese frosting cuts through the heavy chocolatey taste and makes it lighter. Thank you for having the metric measurements in your blog! As an italian I really appreciate it.
I tweak it a bit: I use half of the sugar and I add no butter to the frosting. My little italian heart could never cope with the amount of sugar in the original recipe!

Just had to comment and say I made this cake last night for my husbands birthday today and I just had a slice and its truly the nicest chocolate cake I've ever had. Soo so indulgent and chocolatey and the creme cheese chocolate frosting is Devine. Its everything you could want in a chocolate cake. The actual cake sponge layers are so springy and moist and that's even before you add the creme cheese layers. Just wanted to write this to help anyone else wondering how the recipe turns out. 100 percent worth making. Dont skip any of the ingredients and make it exactly how is stated and you wont go wrong 🍫🎂

Made the cake recipe yesterday, baked as cupcakes. Very nice baked density...not heavy at...good sponginess and texture. The flavor is awesome! They appear dark (did not use dark cocoa) but the taste is light and smooth. This made 42 cupcakes.

Just tried this recipe and i thought it smelled a bit too much like baking soda so I was afraid to taste, but WOW it is absolutely incredible. My European husband who thinks American cakes are too sweet loved it too. Definitely a winner, and my new go to recipe. ❤

Just tried this cake and the texture and taste is to die for. I also made a mixture with wine and juice from maraschino cherries and soaked the cake. I filled with cherry cream cheese frosting with cherry bits 😍😍😍. Delish. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼

I made this cake again tonight for the second time. I made more icing this time and added a little more espresso powder to the batter and icing. The espresso really makes the chocolate pop. A fantastic cake.

I have made several chocolate cakes over the past few months and recently tried yours, omg, yours are by far the best and the only ones I family likes so from now on, yours is the only recipe I use for chocolate and lemon or orange zest cakes. So gorgeously moist, everybody asks not for a slice but a whole cake to be made.
The only alterations I have made are the cupful of oil instead of 1/2 and the frosting I only use Marge lots of dark cocoa powder and icing sugar which they all say is like heaven itself. Thank you for such a delicious cake, will not be using anyone else s recipe from now on. Xx

Omg this recipe is like perfect, I've tried many recipes but none of them tasted like the cakes we buy from outside . But this one tastes exactly like the birthday cakes we buy, except slightly more richer and luscious

This has been my go to chocolate cake recipe for the past 3-4 years. Always a hit. I prefer to use the Dutch process cocoa powder.

I’ve made this countless times for my daughters birthday cake. Each your I think to myself I’ll make something different this year but every time my daughter pleads for this cake. In our house we refer to it as “Matilda Cake” 💜💜💜
