I would say he has as hard a time answering that question as most Christian’s would. It doesn’t mean he isn’t a Christian. I’d say he answered very well.

This just shows that God is an attempt to express this human thought...

He's probably answering by thinking of the foundations of quantum physics, namely wave functions, which he knows are deterministic. However, deep inside he wants to detatch his humanity from it, which is why he says that in his heart the answer is free will.

Predestination and free will are not opposing ideas. they are complimentary. What is predestined cannot be accomplished without moral agents and a universe that is structured by physical laws and moral beings are governed by moral law.
