We've ALL seen those "worst reviewed" makeup artist videos by now so I wanted to take my own informative approach to this concept!! I wanted to talk about 10 warning signs that a makeup artist may not be such a great artist! This is especially helpful if you are someone who is looking for a makeup artist or maybe have doubts about the one that they hired.

Of course, in true Julie Ruby fashion, I wanted this to be informative for other artist as well so I include extra info and tips along to way :)

Yes, although I've never had any formal training I pride myself on being sanitary, and being able to cater to everyone. Taking everything you've learned from this industry is key to growing and improving!

Hygiene is so important. There’s a MUA YouTuber that I found recently that does great work but in one of her videos she mentioned that she only washes her brushes once a month and relies on brush sprays the rest of the time. I commented politely about the cleaning and she snapped at me and her followers piled on top. Ended up deleting my comment bc I wasn’t about to deal with that behaviour.

Never had formal training myself. Tried to work with MAC but at the time it was suuuper competitive 2015? I wasn’t selected after the model makeup interview but I took what I could from that interview. I told them I loved the opportunity to be here and so happy for it. Asked what they suggest I can improve on they said try to incorporate more textures, ie matte + shimmer + gloss etc. Another guy that was sitting right next to me said he loved my eyeshadow & i was like really? Thanks! His model came out so good and he wasn’t selected either but fast forward a couple years later and he became this big time/ well known makeup artist through Instagram so I love that! Just because we didn’t get it at mac doesn’t mean it’s over or we suck- on the contrary! We kept pushing and will continue to learn & improve & keep that dream alive!

YESSS!!! I absolutely love this!!! One thing I love to say during trials is instead of telling brides do you want me to “fix” or “change”; I always say “adjust” or “tweak”. I think it gives more of a complimentary tone of wording rather than harsh like we did something wrong since we are adjusting to the clients preference! Loved this style of video!!

Every time I finish eyebrows and eyeshadow I ask if that looks okay or if they want me to change adjust anything up I’m glad I’m not the only one I thought it was just me who did that I felt all insecure for it lol

Hi everyone! Hi Julie! I agree with all you have listed. I have noticed that some MUA's have a pride issue that deters them from being professional. Their level of arrogance is off putting, too. I recommend to any MUA to take a business class that includes business etiquette. This helps with the professional aspect of the job. Oh, Julie you are soo right about hygiene; SANITATION in this industry is IMPERATIVE! This will make or break your reputation. Thanks Julie for touching on these important subjects. :)

Thank you for this! I officially began my makeup artistry journey this month and one of the things I focused on the most is sanitation. I’ve gotten my makeup done only a handful of times and outside of going to the Sephora or MAC counter- every artist I went to had dirty brushes or a hectic work area. I’ve done so much research to ensure that I’m marking all the boxes in that category. And watching your videos helped a ton as well 💗

EDIT: I make sure to ask about skin types as well! I have never been asked that before and because of this my makeup application fell through sometimes. I remember stopping an artist before she applied primer and telling her what my skin type was and she literally said it didn’t matter because she uses the same thing for everyone 😭

So many good points! This is great constructive advice, I have to agree with furthering education. We sometimes oversee that especially with education at a arms reach on social media and different platforms. I'll be looking for more courses to take so I can improve my skills. Thank you 💓

Hey Julie!
First off you are my fav makeup blogger because you are so real and you do an amazing job. You also share a ton of useful tips and tricks so I make sure not to miss a video !
I have been doing makeup professionally for about a year (I did before also but that was before I went to makeup school). Where I learned makeup they didn’t teach us how to work with different skin types so I pretty much just researched a lot. I have been struggling with applying makeup on very dry skin. For example, I had a client who I knew beforehand had dry skin. So I cleaned her face with Micellar water, then applied hydrating serum then a sheet moisturizing mask, also did some massage for her. After that settled I went in with Smashbox primer for dry skin and started working on the eyes. For foundation I used Estée Lauder Futurist because it’s supposed to be good for dry skin. I used a sponge and only tapped, I also did not use a lot. Afterwards I put just tiny amounts of setting powder right where needed and of course setting spray in the end. Still the foundation did not look perfect. Especially on the chin it started to separate … you couldn’t tell unless you got up really close to her but still … I tried fixing it with a little more setting spray and it worked but it still was not perfect overall. I actually got extremely upset at myself that maybe I’m just not talented enough to be a makeup artist and still I feel a bit off. Because everyone else seems to publish perfect pictures which I’m not sure whether they do it with a filter or not… LOL how do you manage when you get clients with such dry skin? What am I doing wrong ? And also - did you ever feel in the beginning like you were not good enough and just … depressed over the whole situation ?
Thank you so much for taking your time to read it i literally have no one else to ask
May Gd bless you with much success and health !

As a makeup artist I totally agree with everything in this video. When I'm doing a large event. Its quite often that I end up fixing other makeup artist mistakes or things clients wanted but other makeup artist refused to fix or do. Of course I wait until after the other artists leaves which most often happens and I'm left alone at the end, fixing. It sucks but I also love helping others feel better. It's horrible to want something done and it turns out really bad, especially with the face. You should add another category. People who say they are makeup artists but don't have an actual makeup artist kit, of some kind. Such as the ones who come in with a personal makeup bag, with broken makeup and well used products. 🤢🤮 15:27

Nice video, lovely! I agree with what you mentioned. I have been in the industry for 28 years now and I have seen a lot, lol. I would say and add a few other things, that are important to one's business as a professional makeup
1. Appropriate dress when working on clients:
No shirts exposing full frontal of your breasts/cleavage, wear clean clothing- no stains, tears, or holes, wear comfortable clothing & shoes- no sweats or pajama pants, lol, something that you can freely move in and won't slow you down, good shoes that support your feet for you'll be on feet for awhile, and dress accordingly to the event you are working at.
#Nails- this is a pet peeve of mine when I have trained other makeup artists, lol...

Short nails are best, medium length is fine, but long very long knife-life nails are a safety work hazard. Plus, it prevents you in opening products, you could hurt your client when doing their eyes, and it slows down your working process.

#A well-stocked kit:
For every client according to their skincare needs, tone of skin, and application/method of products. If the makeup artist apologizes more than once in not having certain products or tools to do the job, then they are not a prepared, professional working makeup artist and should not be taking clients.

#Wear makeup
I can not tell you how many artists I have seen, that go bare faced or barely wear a full face of makeup when at jobs & working on clients. Remember, you are a walking advertisement for your business. Clients will see how you do your face/makeup and have more confidence in your work, thinking if you look good then they will too!
Of course, not all makeup artists are created equally, lol...but most that care about makeup application will care about how they present themselves to their clients in wearing makeup themselves.

# 1 Pet Peeve of mine!!!
Never say or be in the frame of mind IT TILL YOU MAKE IT!!!
Reason being is that you will be placing yourself in danger of failing! Being under prepared or over prepared for the wrong thing. Pretending to know something you don't will become exposed when you are expected to deliver and will cost you business and future referrals. Its best to honest while being willing to try if they let you.

Hope other upcoming makeup artists finds this helpful in your makeup journey! I learned through the years through trial & error, but had a great professional makeup artist mentor that showed me the way. Always be willing to learn at any given time and later customize it in how it can benefit you and your business.
Thank you, for making & sharing this video, Julie! Have a blessed day!
Much success to you!
Cheers♡,
Joy Carey
