Pizza and beer is pretty standard for helping a friend for a couple of hours with moving. These days, tossing in some money for gas would be nice as well. If you know someone fairly well there's no harm in asking politely and if they don't want to, that's fine. If it's hitting up a coworker you barely know and expecting lots of heavy lifting and repeatedly hauling things across the city, that's another matter.

If ANYONE tries to guilt or cajole me into paying for their food with the whole 'We FoRgOt OuR WaLlEt' bullshit, I would respond with this: "That sounds like YOUR problem. Good luck with that." And then I would leave them to their CONSEQUENCES.

I think for the AITA story, nobody’s an asshole here. OP asked for what he’s used to, the guy isn’t interested, and though OP didn’t get it he didn’t get demanding.

On the coworker with a truck: it’s ok to ask. Unless they owe you it’s not ok to expect, and your request should come with a way out for them

I have always made the beer/soda and pizza arrangement with friends for moving too. The person with the truck may not see OP as a friend, and that's why they want monetary payment instead.

Don't know where 2nd story takes place, but that doesn't sound like a choosing beggar. It's fine to ask friends and colleagues if they agree to help you for free. People do this all the time. Of course, one has the right to refuse, but I don't think proposing pizza and beer is a choosing beggar behaviour. I'm super happy getting pizza and beer after helping my friends move.

As someone who works at a dog daycare, that “volunteer” thing is not only bullshit, but extremely unsafe. At my facility, I had to undergo their training program before they’d even leave me alone with a pack. Just because you love dogs doesn’t mean you can predict them and read their body language. Safety procedure is only part of keeping them safe

Ok if someone tries to force me to pay for their meals I would just explain this to the waitress/waiter and then ask to split the bill

"give me 30 to replace the money I paid for the broken one"

... no.

Last story is 1000% a scam. Each and every message sent by the "employer" always drop a red flag.

Yeah, I don’t have a truck or anything but have been asked to help friend move. Mainly just to help lift the heavier stuff into the uhaul.
And was paid with pizza and drinks.
And my friend had his stuff already packed up to go before I got to his old place. That’s a must.

The digging story brings me back to when my parents needed to repaint a rubber based paint on the walls to prevent water from soaking into the basement. This meant my dad and I (with a bit of help from my sis and nephew) would dig down ~8ft, 2ft wide and about 8ft long. After that was done, we filled the hole, refilled after the water compacted everything, and then moved the remaining dirt to the garden. We then filled the area with concrete for a patio which took about 3000 lbs worth. It was exhausting but it was a really good workout. Not to mention, my parents saved a ton of money just doing them themselves with me as their helper.

Because my husband owns a large truck and he's a rather large guy, he gets asked to help people move on average, twice a month or so. He used to help but that came to a screeching halt when we moved and not a single one of those people agreed to help. Not one. My husband was never paid or even comped for gas, there was usually just pizza and beer and he was fine with that. He just got tired of being taken advantage of. So, now when people ask, he just tells them he charges more than the professionals but he'll clear his schedule if they want. 🤷🏻‍♀️

For the last one, isnt it customary to pay the artist a portion of the fee to make sure the customer doesn't suddenly decided "meh, I dont like it" and bail, leaving the artist with something they cant use and time/materials wasted? No way in hell I'm paying a customer/employer especially when they're acting sketchy af🙄

Rslash, there's nothing wrong with asking for help with good and pizza, she even was willing to pay for the gas for it

I had a co-worker once ask our boss if he would use the truck he was demoing to help her get boxes to move. He had just turned the truck in, so he needed to sign it back out, then drive her across town to get boxes (which HE paid for), haul them to her house on the opposite end of town, then wait to carry the boxes inside until after she had gone inside so he wouldn't confuse her new puppy. It sort of became an in-joke among our department (she left because she was moving cities)

My daughter had a son. We needed a stroller and my wife saw one on FB market. It cost 5 bucks but was so nice. The woman we got it from said she didn't list it for free just because she wanted to avoid the people who responded to free stuff. Best 5 dollars I spent last year.

I work at a local family owned diner. We open at 6am. I need to be there at about 5am. So I wake up between 3-3:30 am. That’s so ridiculous she wants to pay 52 cents an hour. Wow! No thank you.

If she had just left a bad living situation and kids having to wash in cold water she should consider approaching a shelter to see what govt programs they can get to access resources.

But I'm willing to bet, they'd just resell it.
