When the solution for 42 appeared in the news my father asked me if I had seen it already. I told him I already watched a video of the discoverer. Now I'm gonna tell him that there is a new solution for 3 before any news media can cover it.

"So, why don't you just clean your Petri dishes?"
"I expect to invent Penicilin any day now"

- a discussion that definitely didn't happen before the invention of Penicilin
(a comment on "why are you doing this instead of something useful")

I like how he speaks with perfect precision but also in an easy, approachable structure and way. Sometimes it feels very difficult to achieve that.

One reason I think projects like this are important is that they develop new optimization techniques in computer programming. In general, a lot of the practical benefits from solving pure math problems comes from the methods used to do so.

I know a lot about computers, but the last time I said "this event might not happen during my lifetime", it happened less than five years later. (The event was "a computer beating the top players in the game of go"). So nowadays I am much more prudent before saying something like that... :-)

He handles the questions very, very well.

Brady asks the most amazing and lucid questions. For example when he asked if there was a smaller solution they might have brushed past. Its like he read my mind and said what i was thinking without me being aware of what i was even thinking myself. Thank you Brady. And keep in mind you are a very big part of the reason me, and many others, love maths.

There is a benefit to discovering more answers beyond just the joy of collecting. They provide more fodder for finding patterns, which may lead to a proof.

This has been one of the most exciting and heartwarming sagas on Numberphile!

I was just reading New Scientist and Andy was quoted as saying it might take a century. I’m glad it didn’t take so long and I love seeing breaking math news on Numberphile.

I can't believe that how many mathematical discoveries were made thanks to Numberphile and other mathematical YouTubers (such as James Grime and Matt Parker)
