The funniest thing about "HBO's Rome" is that the two main "fictional" characters of the show, Vorenus and Pullo, are actually inspired by two real-life centurions with the same name briefly mentioned in Caesar's diary during the conquest of Gaul (who have also appeared in other products about Ancient Rome, like the "Total War" games and the "Masters of Rome" book series). Imagine what the real Valerius and Pullo would have said while watching a television series that portrays them and their families in a way that is surely completely different from how they really were. 🤣🤣🤣

The changes they make to the history are understandable and forgivable. You can tell the writers knew the source materiel well and wanted to do it justice.

Man I love when shows actually put in effort to look accurate instead of just going with the stereotypical style for any given age. Gotta watch this show now lol. Thanks for the videos man!

Hustle-bones

The dialogue, the setting, the sheer attention to detail, by Mars, this is one of the greatest works HBO will ever produce. Actors for Caesar, Mark Antony, Titus pullo, Lucius vorenus, and of course Atia all knocked it out of the park. First Augustus was a class act and the second wasn’t too bad as well. Overall, 10/10 show that I still watch a few times a year. I reserve a special gratitude for all those who worked on this masterpiece.

Fun fact: the series was actually filmed in Rome, in cinecittà (basically the italian hollywood), where an entire set of buildings was created just to recreate ancient Rome. The set was never dismantled since it is still used today for many products set in ancient Rome. Another fun fact: the entirety of Gangs of New York was filmed in Cinecittà just because Scorsese is a huge fan of Fellini.

I worked on this series and the backlot was incredible. It was built at Cinecitta Studios in Rome.

Man I loved this show back in the day, it was excellent, a lot of shows don’t come close to this nowadays.

There was supposed to be a third season but because it was the most expensive series HBO cut it and forced the director to condense it into the second season witch is why it's jumps through alot of significant moments during that time and unfortunately skips some as well.

I loved it, it has this rough and raw yet regal feel to it which makes it authentic, also the characters are very well developed, specially in season 1, it has perfect pacing of storylines and historical events beautifully connecting to all of the characters. For me it has been the most re-watchable series of all time. Wish we had more seasons of it.
