I don't think this movie was as successful as it should have been, quite the opposite. Sadly. I'm not typically a person that would enjoy a Pocahontas story, but the "real" feel of this movie is so captivating, I don't even care is essentially a love story. To me, it is a so much more. Its a quite realistic window into the past, or specifically into the 16th century.
And oh yeah, It didn't hurt that Pocahontas looked really like a Pocahontas. Beauty and all.
Either way, do not miss out on this 2005 gem!

I know the gunsmith that made Smith's wheellock pistol. He told me this, "I made two pistols for this film, one a working replica and the other a prop gun. It was suppose to be two shots spliced together of Colin firing the real gun and then cutting to him tossing the prop in the water. But Colin wanted to get the scene done in one take and tossed the real pistol instead. Somewhere out in a Virginian swamp lays a very nice $6, 000 gun if someone were to find it."

I like how the armour actually works in this scene! Real adventure.

I like how the scene portrays the armors advantage and disadvantage. Its able to keep him safe from projectiles and blunt force to a certain degree, but because of his position and circumstance it limits his sight/reaction, and slows him down to fight back against Algonquin rushes, also this makes it good for the Natives that they outmaneuvered him until ready for the takedown. Beautifully done.

I like how the natives are portrayed as thinking in our modern way when in reality they were thinking how they could use these well armed soldiers as to their advantage against their own enemies.

"If they do us no harm, why should we care?"

That aged well

The interactions in this film feel so authentic. Few words. Just looks and mannerisms. Very underrated movie.

Lived 15 minutes from Jamestown for a bit. They have a good exhibit, a lot of artifacts including armor like this is in the museum. They did a good job. If you’re nearby you can tour the museum and even walk around the Jamestown place. Aside from the museum you can drive or wander about and get a feel for it on your own. It’s neat. Some ruins are still there.

This brings back memories. I worked on this movie as a second boom operator and sound utility. It was one of the first big "Hollywood" features of my career. What a trial by fire this one. Really tested all of us involved as filmmakers. 16 hour days mostly shot from spring to fall in the Virginia marshlands. We shot through a rare hurricane that blew through Virginia, a vicious mid Atlantic summer, and everything else these locations threw at us. At the time I was still a Virginia native (live in LA now). Yet, I had never experienced a Virginia quite like this. I would never experience filmmaking like this again over my 20+ years in the business. I luckily have had the honor to work with Terrence Malik twice during my career. Terrence is part of a dying breed of filmmaker. That swamp fight scene we shot over the course of a very very long day. All the actors were on platforms and the rest of the crew was submerged up to chests in Virginia swamp water. Water snakes buzzed all around us while we shot and when we got out half of us were covered in leeches. Terrence also hates having to wait for lights to be set up so we did the ENTIRE shoot without a single light. Everything seen here was done with natural light and a dedicated crew of grips armed with bounce boards. That's what makes that scene in the hut so magical. There was not a single light on that set when we shot it. THAT ladies and gentlemen is movie magic.

Did you know that John Smith fought against the Turks in Hungary before he joined up for the American expedition? He was made a nobleman for his bravery in combat and lived in Buda (Pest) for a while. I think there's a plaque on the house where he lived.

None of them seem to care about the life long friend they all grew up with that got killed just a little while ago. Guess they all thought he was an asshole.

The atmosphere of this is overwhelming, one can actually feel and hear this place is a virgin forest in the 17th century.

Pocahontas was only thirteen years old when she met John Smith. Pocahontas often came to Jamestown as an emissary of her father, sometimes bearing gifts of food to help the hard-pressed settlers. She befriended the settlers and became acquainted with English ways. In 1609, John Smith was injured from a fire in his gunpowder bag and was forced to return to England. Eventually Pocahontas would marry John Rolfe. On April 5, 1614, Pocahontas and John Rolfe married with the blessing of Chief Powhatan and the governor of Virginia. Their marriage brought a peace between the English colonists and the Powhatans, and in 1615 Pocahontas gave birth to their first child, Thomas.

It's incredible to think that even in the technologically advanced time we live there are still some who live in an almost prehistoric fashion
