XIII Legion in Gaul.
"Get back in formation you drunken fool!"

Legionary Titus Pullo is a hero of the 13th legion, but look at him now.
Justice knows every man's number. He has committed a terrible sacrilege, and he will pay for it with his life! As will any man here who breaks the law. Brawlers and drunkards will be flogged. Thieves will be strangled. Deserters will be crucified.

This is amazing a main character that actually wears a helmet in battle.

I wish this were longer. I understand budgetary reasons, but this 2 minute screen is still some of the best roman warfare committed to screen

Finally a series/movie where people actually fight in formation like normal human beings

I do love how when Pullo punches Vorenus, the rest of the legionaires deck him in the mouth and hold him captive for immediate punishment. The Legion takes ZERO shit, even from their own.

Look at that..not a cellphone in sight. Just people living in the moment.

According to Total War logic, retreating the first line basically means 80% of them die instantly.

This is how Roman soldiers could fight all day. They'd swap out. 2.5 minutes of fighting, approximately 45 minutes of rest at full strength. To the enemy it'd seem like the romans were never-ending.

The Romans had incredibly smart tactics - look at how they rotated.
That means men would fight a couple minutes, get back, get rest and would have full strength again
for the attack. It was also a good mechanism to get their wounded to medical attention fast.

Formations... the only thing Pullo ever pulls out of

Not familiar with this series but based on this scene alone, it's actually quite a significant feature that the Romans are seen not shouting and keeping dead quiet compared to the screaming Gauls. During that era, armies facing off would often scream and try to intimidate the opposing side - but not the Romans. The Romans believed that if they kept dead silent, it would show that they were a discipline force compared to a frightened mob (which were most armies back then compared to a wealthier Rome). And unsurprisingly, this tactic actually worked and unsettled many of Rome's enemies on the battlefield.

If only Rome had had Game of Throne's budget.

"Justice knows every man's number"
-Lucius Vorenus

I just realized that Vorenus automatically knows that it's Pullo the fool who pull out of the line.

For some reason I really like that short moment of Mark Anthony casually enjoying the flogging and eating an apple.

Oh how much I would trade GOT season 8 for Rome season 3

This short 2 minute sequence, is the grittiest, most realistic portrayal of Roman soldiers in combat ever committed to TV or film.

Today, Ray Stevenson (Pullo) died! He had a big heart and a great talent and he was an amazing person! God, please rest his soul!

As a historian I can say that it was the best retraction series in Roman history.
