If the mainline is tied directly to the litter, the bowline on a coil captures several structural elements. This is also a good way to attach a tag line to the litter.

In this video, LeRoy Harbach, Senior CMC Rescue School Instructor, shows us how to tie a bowline on a coil. The bowline on a coiled knot works well for attaching tag lines to litters in both horizontal and vertical configurations, as the two loops can self-adjust to equal lengths.

I love using this for tag lines, but I use a much easier technique to tie it. If you can tie a regular bowline, you can also tie this one more easily. Pay out the rope you need to tie it. Make your beginning round turn. Grab the running end and put it through one attachment point, then bring it through the round turn as though you were going to tie the regular bowline. Instead of finishing the knot by going around the standing end, take the running end back through the second attachment point and back to the round turn. Finish it off as though it were a regular bowline. Now you can adjust the knot to the proper angle between the two attachment points. In fact, you can use it in a 4 point fashion to construct a fully adjustable basket bridle under minimalist conditions, with out having to use a dedicated bridle at all. It just takes a lot of rope.
