ASUS Republic of Gamers Swift PG42UQ 41.5' 4K HDR 138 Hz Monitor Review

I switched from a 27" display connected to my MacBook Pro to the Asus ROG PH42UQ OLED Display to see if it would help me be more productive. It's the best display out right now and solves all of the problems I had using a TV as my monitor.

I was using a 43'' Samsung QN90C as a monitor and ended up returning it. I started having terrible headaches even when not using the TV/Monitor, and also had many of the issues you mentioned, like using only the center of the screen and having to move the head around too much, either gaming or working. As it had a VA panel, I was also having color shifting issues.

Now I'm using a 32'' sized curved monitor and I'm enjoying it quite a lot, feeling it's much more ergonomic. I can work or play for hours without getting headaches.

I still would like to have something like a 36'', 37'' or even 38'' 16:9 monitor just to be more immersed on sim games and open world, without that feeling of being on the "front row of the movie theater" as I had with the 43'' display.

Maybe in the future we'll have more monitor options.

Great review, thanks. It was exactly the information I was looking for. I mainly use office apps and flight sim. I am moving from a PG35V Ultrawide and am waiting for my PG42UQ to arrive next week. I hate the PG35V Ultrawide. I don;t like the screen ratio, the colors are washed out, the blacks are terrible, the haloing around the cursor in dark backgrounds is awful, and the resolution is poor. I have a 4K 27 inch Asus next to it and it is so much better. I usually have multiple windows open at a time, so I figured the larger screen would be fine for me, but I am still worried that it is still just too big. Based on what I've read, I will give it time for me to get used to it.

I would love to see how you lay out windows on it. for example, I have a 38 ultrawide lg and do three windows across. I was thinking of swapping it out for this so I could do that but also have slack, messenger and chat on the bottom. Nice office setup by the way!

You know you can change your resolution and aspect ratio, making it, say, 27" surrounded by black borders all around. You can use that when you don't need all that space. If you go to (on the remote): Image>Aspect Central. You have several options: Full; Equivalent; 1:1; 16:9 (24"W); 16:9 (27"W); 21:9 (34"W). I think you could use one of those (especially 27" and 34") when you need a little more focus, and go back to full when you need the whole screen.

I have the 48" version as I'm an albino and very shortsighted, so every monitor is too small for me lol. So I switch between those aspects depending on what I'm doing (working/playing games).

Thanks for a great review. How do you feel about the monitor five months later?

A lot of good insights in your review. I have been using a Samsung 43" M7 for over a year and just recently graduated to an LG 48" Oled. monitor. At first, with the M7, it was too large but I soon got used to it. Having multiple windows open really helped out with my work flow. The longer I used the large monitor, the more it seemed natural. The only downside was my rather narrow desk width which had me using my keyboard at the edge of the desk. But it was far from a deal breaker. During road trips, I found going back to using my 16" M1 MBP alone, was very cramped and tedious. When I upgraded to the 48" LG Oled monitor (the 42" ASUS wasn't available), I hardly noticed the increase in size. I did however, notice the huge increase in display quality. An added bonus is in the evening, I use the monitor for streaming video and Apple TV and the picture quality at times, is stunning. My only complaint is the automatic brightness dimming, while working on spreadsheets, word docs or emails. I will see if the LG service remote that I ordered, will also work on this monitor to adjust the auto dimming feature. I wish the LG 48 had as many usable ports as the ASUS but its still quite usable. And my guess is, you will miss the 42" Asus 🙂

How was the text clarity? For example, is it usable in Windows or Mac OS for word processing or worksheets?

My eyes hurt a lot so much after hours of using this monitor. And text starting to get blurry at time. Any similar experiences?

I work all day long on my computer and game a lot. The only thing preventing me from bying this monitor is the burn in...
I got the Alienware 38" 3860x1600 144hz but It would be a great upgrade to go Oled.

wow, i just realized that not only brands like amazon, lv, and many other garments brands rather getting rid of their products when no longer sold for so long, but also tech brands, like nvidia, amd, intel, asus, msi, lenovo, alienware, acer, razer, sony, microsoft, etc3. they also destroy their products, no sh1t the earth fucked up.

I've gamed on this monitor. It's ok, OLED no doubt and crisp clear image on screen. NOT to bright but ok. HDR is not that great. Too expensive @ $1400 USD, for 1, 000 I would grab one myself. I've seen it on sale for 1, 199 USD but still I would not pay anything over 1, 000 USD.
