I'm a software engineer, and I've loved this whole video, but I burst out laughing when I heard him say they even improved the code quality with their hacked DLL. I know that feel, you can't help but refactor code when you see poor practices, even the hackers OCD was triggered. Freaking epic lmao.

I'm a complete Luddite but even so, I totally enjoyed this cyber crime video. It was nearly a sci-fi drama with all the advanced tech talk. Most people have no clue what's going on in the technical background of their internet activity. Amazing!

As you rightly indicate, it is highly likely that the full effect of this intrusion is not understood. The calming words from Mandiant (as regular Gov. contractors) can be taken with a pinch of salt. Security professionals are well aware that the very best hacks and hackers are the ones we do not know about... as you described it was quite fortunate that this intrusion was stumbled upon. Also the shocking lapses in security from both Mandiant (surprising) and Government Departments (not so surprising) show how far we have to go to become even basically secure from determined hackers.

This expose was very well put together and also a disturbing reality in tech world. I fear that there is more to tell, if it ever is found or published.

While you can never condone black-hat activities, you must admit this whole thing has been put together so well. From the way of injecting, the restraint (because they didn't do it to F-up the world), to the improving of source code -because it was so bad, they just couldn't leave it the way it was-, to the real world situations that allowed them to pull out on time -because of user error in the FBI-, to them clearly just doing all this as a test.
There is a big chance for 2 scenarios: scenario 1: attacks like this are just practice runs, to get to the second scenario
scenario 2: since they spent such a long time investigating, preparing & showing restraint in activities, it is very possible them wanting to be found, announced and then delete their infection is just a gigantic smokescreen, to take notice away from the real backdoor that is still active until this day (because if I was planning something like this for 5-10years, you better believe I would add multiple layers at which they would presumably would have "found" my way in and could block it, all to conceal the real method.

Nice details - thanks for covering it so well. One thing I’d like to understand: how do they know which group was behind the attack? When they see similarities it’s reasonable to assume it’s the same group. But how do you find their identity?
