CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ms Gruwell (Hilary Swank) assigns a final class project to her students; to create a book out of all of their diary entries.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Assigned the thankless task of teaching freshman English at a gang-infested Long Beach, CA high school, a 23-year-old teacher resorts to unconventional means of breaking through to her hardened students in director Richard LaGravenese's adaptation of Erin Gruwell's best-seller The Freedom Writer's Diaries: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them. Her students had been written off, and her chances of succeeding scoffed at, but Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank) wasn't about to go down without a fight. Long Beach is a place where a new war is waged with each passing day, and when the hardened students who walk those dangerous hallways sense an outsider attempting to understand their plight, their cynical resentment threatens to keep a deadly cycle in motion. Despite the initially hostile reaction she receives in the classroom, Gruwell uses the writings of Anne Frank and Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo to teach her students not only the basis of the English language, but compassion and tolerance as well. Later, when the time comes to tell their own tales in a project specially designed to explore the daily violence that the majority of students have grown numb to, the barriers that had once stood so strong gradually begin to crumble. When the only chance for survival is to befriend the person who was once your mortal enemy, the world is opened to a whole new realm of possibilities.

My health teacher in the 7th grade was like this. She told me I was special and I knew she meant it from her heart. I will never forget it.

They felt loved and important which is the most important thing... She gave them a deeper sense in life. And this is the best role of Hilary Swank.

I had a teacher like her. Mrs.Boardwine. I will literally remember her name to the day I stop breathing. She was always pushing me to my best. I visited her classroom everyday, always told her all my issues, always told her what was going on. The reason I did this was because she always listened. I always tried to make her life easy and I always did my work. She knew me better than my own mother. She’s on my list of people I look up to.
My junior year I moved schools, on my last day, which was the day before homecoming, she threw me a going away party. The day before I previously wrote her a letter explaining how she’s made me felt and how she’s impacted my life. Then when everyone left the going away party because of class change, I stayed behind to clean up, I didn’t care if I was going to be late to my next class.
She gave me a letter back, one explaining how she was so proud of me of becoming the person I am. It made me cry. On the note she wrote, “This isn’t a goodbye, this is a see you later”..
the next year I tried open enrolling to a school 30 minutes away, they would never answer my calls, always put my mom on voicemail..
so I went to her to go to the superintendent to let me come back. And it worked.
I then came back to the school, and continued on my schedule with her. Always seeing her before class. I got her a gift and it said “Good teachers teach, Great teachers inspire”
At the end of the year I told her I was the first kid in my family to graduate and she hugged me so tightly.
I will never in my life forget her.

I had a teacher like this once. Not that I was a violent gang-member, but that teacher really mattered. She was amazing. It's people like her we need.

I only had one teacher who saw I was failing and had a sit down with me . I started breaking down crying to her about my living situation and family issues . She went as far as to get into contact with social services and offered me a place to live with her when she had just gotten married . I declined because I wasn’t going to ruin her honeymoon phase with her husband but I’ll never forget that woman till the day I die ❤️

My teacher in high school did a whole curriculum on this movie. She did similar steps as this teacher and didn’t explain why or what she was doing but it made it amazing!! After the end of the year she put the movie on and it truly impacted us 100%. Absolutely loved this and always remember.

I remember every math teacher I ever had in school failed me and it discouraged me from following my dream in engineering and on top of that I would face bullying for simply asking questions and the teacher never knew how to answer my questions until.... it came down to one teacher in my junior who believed in me and would chase me down the hall to do my homework and she wouldn't let me go until I got it right. I thank her I have super exceed everyone who doubted me and I went up to calc 3 in college and will be graduating in biochemistry this may. Thank you ms.nyugen

i am really bad at math unless explained thoroughly. I remember once i came up to my math teacher and i told him i am stupid and he told me "Never say that, you are better than that." Ill never forget the feeling i had he made me feel proud of my failure because i realized that if a teacher said that i have hope. i wanna make this comment to salute him and to give a toast to all the teachers out there who truly are a teacher! Thank u Mr. Brown <3 i never felt stupid again the way i did before that day.

My English teacher was amazing like this, I was the quiet girl with few friends and she made me believe in myself when I was a kid, truly got me through some hard times where I didn’t believe I was worthy.

I had a teacher in high school, she was mean she was horrible and tough and the best teacher I ever had. I’m 100% convinced she is the reason I graduated saying she did not want to see me next year. And she will never forget me.
