CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ms. Gruwell (Hillary Swank) holds a class exercise in order to show her students that they have more in common than they believe.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Assigned the thankless task of teaching freshman English at a gang-infested Long Beach, CA high school, a 23-year-old teacher resorts to unconventional means of breaking through to her hardened students in director Richard LaGravenese's adaptation of Erin Gruwell's best-seller The Freedom Writer's Diaries: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them. Her students had been written off, and her chances of succeeding scoffed at, but Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank) wasn't about to go down without a fight. Long Beach is a place where a new war is waged with each passing day, and when the hardened students who walk those dangerous hallways sense an outsider attempting to understand their plight, their cynical resentment threatens to keep a deadly cycle in motion. Despite the initially hostile reaction she receives in the classroom, Gruwell uses the writings of Anne Frank and Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo to teach her students not only the basis of the English language, but compassion and tolerance as well. Later, when the time comes to tell their own tales in a project specially designed to explore the daily violence that the majority of students have grown numb to, the barriers that had once stood so strong gradually begin to crumble. When the only chance for survival is to befriend the person who was once your mortal enemy, the world is opened to a whole new realm of possibilities.

I remember losing 5 friends to gang violence by the time I was 14. That gang shit ain't no joke. Avoid it at all cost.

Thanking them afterwards is such a huge move. She acknowledges that what they just did was difficult and expressed gratitude.

Watching this movie, it can make you see that no matter what races we are on the outside, we are still the same from the inside. It shows that there are many things, if not yourselves being involved to something, your friends and/or family are involved in it. And it also shows that no matter what races we are, we all have somewhat similar problems.

I could've sworn there was a part in this movie where one of the students called the teacher "Ma" then she was like "I'm not your mother!" and then another kid explained to her that he's calling her Ma as a way of respect. Where can I find that part?

This scene was always emotional to me... When I was in high school during my Junior year my boyfriend got murdered. Everytime I watch this Movie and this scene comes up I start having memories of him and tears just start flowing. I've had alot of friends who lost their friends and family to Gang Violence. It's the worst 😭 RIP Anthony Granton, you're forever missed Babe!♡

When I was interning at an agency for college, this agency woud hold workshops with freshmen students at local high schools called 'Pointbreak.' This was one of the activities done with the students.

The thing I like about this scene is that regardless of skin color or culture, pain and loss can exist across everything, and its through that, that people start to bond and understand each other. I saw the Take channel down grade this film among others cause it follows a White Savior Trope, which I disagree with as Lean on Me, and Coach Carter among others not only follow the same kind of school educators plot but all three are based on real stories.

Sort of puts things into perspective doesn't it when you realize the people you don't like have pretty similar stories. I like scenes like this, whether they are real or not.

I'm a father, my daughter is a 5th grader. I had financial difficulties so I couldn't pay the school tution fee so she couldn't attend school. 1Day her class teacher called me on my cell & explained to me why it is important for her to attend school, also told me how her own dad had the same problem & how he managed to keep her & her siblings in school. I took immidiate steps & arranged the money. Now she's in grade 6.

As a kid, I really connected with this movie. After the influx of desperate people fleeing from a hurricane that destroyed their city, Houston became a hive for gang violence and crime. I remember seeing all the words spray painted on the fences as I walked to school.
So proud to see how far we've come since then
