Math You Need For Calculus

In this video I talk about a math book that you can use to help prepare for Calculus. This book is good because it is goes along very well with what is taught in a college course. It also has actual calculus in it which makes it fun. The book is also good for self-study because it has clear explanations and plenty of exercises. The book is called Precalculus and it was written by Stewart, Redlin, and Watson. This is the same James Stewart who wrote the legendary book Calculus.

One of the best bits of advice I ever got: if you're failing a math class, it's not that class you need to repeat: it's the one before it. So many students of mine struggled in calculus because they never learned their precalc and learned it really well. I enjoyed teaching precalc using the Stewart book, but the Swokowski was really good, too.

I’ve never taken Calculus in my life. But I’m working through College Algebra, Trig, and Pre-Cal. I’m retired and having nothing but time. I’ve decided to devote my free time to mathematics.

This book is very rigorous. I just got it last week and its helped me much more than my teacher and any high school textbooks. Highly recommended

I dropped my Calculus class this semester because I was worried about getting a low GPA and losing my scholarship. I have started to work through College Algebra, Trig, and PreCalc courses on Khan Academy. Your videos have made me realize I can use books as a key resource to learning mathematics. Like others, I assumed that lectures and homework were the only way to learn math and that textbooks weren't useful.

I purchased a used copy of this textbook and will study rigorously and tackle Calculus with confidence next semester. I will proudly add this to my shelf as the first in a long line of mathematics books I hope to order next.

I can vouch for this book 100%, I have the same edition. I finished the entire book having worked MANY problems from every chapter around 10 years ago, and then re-reading (skimming through) each section and doing more problems around 6 years ago for fun. I put it on equal footing with Blitzer. Last year when I thinned out my books, I donated Blitzer and kept this one.

When I went back to school I tested into Precalc because like an idiot I didn't study for the placement exam. It was a night class and there was only one other student. He told me it was his third time taking the class. I thought, oh no, there goes my comeback tour of college.

Then the instructor showed up. She was the smartest supermodel I've ever seen as she did some problems on the board. Then she made us get started on the homework. My classmate immediately raised his hand and said he needed help. So she sat next to him and walked him through it. And so it went for the rest of the semester. I still don't know if he was a genius or a fool for love.

Thank you! As someone who’s had an Achilles heel for mathematics, these videos truly help me out. You’re a godsend, sir! 😊

This book is amazing! So Far I have learnt functions, polynomials, trigonometry and identities (identities were diffucult in terms of the large equations) and logarithms. I am moving onto calculus next. Thankyou!

My ego was elevated when you said your friend is smart as I have been saying the same thing ever since I took precalculus 18 years ago.

I had to check my shelf to make sure you did not steal my copy😀 My copy is 5th edition btw, and I paid 5.95 for mine at a local used book store.

I have the 3rd edition. It has a violin on the front. It looks like its going to be the hardest math book I've ever tried. Right now I'm going to work my way through Stewart's Precalculus, Sullivan's Algebra & Trigonometry, Blitzer's Introductory & Intermediate Algebra for College Students and when it arrives, Stewarts Calculus as much as I can in 2 or 3 months. I'm kind of on a time limit right now with all this math. I need to get through as much as possible in time to apply for online classes by April. I still think I'm probably going to need tutoring in Calculus. I'm going to try to take online classes in BS middle school graded education with a specialty in mathematics.

When I took calculus, I was fortunate in that I had good prep for it. So, calculus itself was something of a joy ride.

Back in the 1960s in small rural Kansas high schools like mine there was no precalculus class or any AP math classes for that matter. However, I had good teachers for Algebra 1 (freshman), geometry (sophmore), Algebra 2 (junior), and Trigonometry (senior). I transitioned to Calculus I with no issues.
