When an equation you spent a week on in calc 1 and then never used again suddenly appears in calc 2, it's like a celebrity cameo in a sitcom

Calculus was the first moment of actual enlightenment in my life.
I had failed my high school finals for 2 years.
I didn't understand shiit, and i refused to understand it as my teachers were busy shoving the formula remembering ScmHIdT into my brain, but my one math teacher told me of a graphical approach.

Took me time but and it hit me completely random when I was in the toilet, but understanding the purpose of integral calculus to find out the area under the curve made me a new sense and created a whole new world to me. That was THE REDIFINING moment in my scientific education.

6 years later, I'm a mechanical engineer dealing with car chassis, HVAC for buildings and 3d printing. Sure, i was late to finish the race, and maybe i was a disappointment to most of the ppl around me, but now i know that my scientific and mathematic education will be lifelong.

My next step for learning is to apply advanced math through softwares like MATLAB to solve real-life problems and create new designs.

Sorry if I seem like a retard y'all. I may be dumb to take so damn long to finish my school and it was damn humiliating, but the the sheer duckn joy of actual understanding, its like weed combined with sunrise at a beach. No humiliation is too high to feel the sheer joy of total assimilation of a concept, to ponder upon its implications.

What's really funny is the fact that there is nobody in the room with Neil. He's just talking to a camera.

My calc teacher showed my class this at the end of the year… perfect timing

Calculus is just the simplification of a LOT of algebra. I remember in Calc. 1 reducing a large algebraic formula into an integral. Crazy stuff, but fundamental. Engineering physics helped me actually understand, physically/mentally, how integration works. I used to hate mathematics, but physics gave it meaning.

I will NEVER talk that passionately about math in my life ever 😂

When training for a difficult job, I would leave the work day thinking I'd never remember all of it. But I would always surprise myself the following day when I realized I had remembered more than I thought. So after that, whenever I'd find myself in that type of situation, I'd remind myself to sleep on it.

Neil's mom:
"So, does Neil have friends in school?"

Teacher:
"Suuure, he's got, uhm.. "math friends".

I love reflecting on my past confusion on things, I used to say “this is impossible” but when I actually practice it it becomes so routine I end up saying other even harder things are impossible, but even then I beat those too

Persistence is the key.. for these difficult endeavors.. I had a 2.6 2.7 GPA in computer science and I've been working as an engineer for over 15 years I figured it out I learned the skill I got better persistence is key but I never give up attitude

Wow so humble. So selfless. We’re so lucky this man graces us with his intellect.

I went through regular school, tutors, summer class, remedial classes, and a fuck ton of youtube videos just so I can understand calculus.
Completely forgot all that shit 1 week into the summer

I remember when I couldn’t understand algebra. It wasn’t a required subject then. Took it in college and when it hit I was in shear awe

An unbelievably simple and thus very effective speech by my hero.

I hate calculus. My professor made us memorize all the half angle formulas and shit. No "cheat sheet". Dogshit

The best way I learned anything was a from a math teacher at school, it started with algebra, I told him, no I can't do, I don't understand and he said to me, ok, if you don't think you can do it, , , fine, , you limit yourself, be lazy, but don't bother to blame anybody for what you didn't do, and you have to agree with anyone that tells you that you're not capable and will never achieve because you're limiting yourself already, that infuriated me but in a good way to motivate me, I didn't double down on my strengths, I doubled down on my weaknesses and managed to make myself understand things that otherwise, my brain would have looked at it and said, no were not doing that. We are the masters of ourselves and we can do anything as long as we don't limit ourselves.

When studying and there's something I can't wrap my head around, I just keep on studying. I know it will come to me eventually and then it will make perfect sense. Just be patient, have confidence and keep on studying.
