When Smart Home standard Matter was released, there weren't any devices you could actually buy that used Matter, but now that Matter has been out for (almost) a year, I take you through the devices that you can actually buy for your smart home to start building on Matter and show you how they work and perform in Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings!

Nanoleaf Essentials LED Strip:

Govee M1 LED Strip (only 2m version says it's matter? Not sure if 5m is):

My conclusion from watching several "Matter" videos is that it is made for manufacturers, not necessarily for consumers.
It is a standard, but individual manufacturers can decide what functionality is allowed through matter and which remain proprietary.
You buy a matter device for a little more than the regular version, and they limit the full functionality "for now"

Great updates. Do a regular series of matter supported devices as they emerge over the coming year!

Thanks for the update Lewis! US based user here and thus far, I've not been overly impressed with Matter. It's not really brought anything of consequence to my setup. One of my first disappointments was the purchase of a dozen TP-Lnk. Kasa, Matter smart plugs. My main use was for the energy monitoring. Needless to say, I was disappointed that it wasn't an entity that was available in Home Assistant (or anywhere else) due to current Matter limitations. I sent them all back and replaced them with Sonoff S31s and haven't looked back. For now, I'm treating Matter like I do proposed firmware feature updates, I'm not making purchases based on what or when they may be added. The promise of Matter is lofty and I'll remain optimistic. 👍

Great video, hopefully in another 12months they will catch up with the missing features. It does seem still early days for matter, and it's a real shame that they haven't enforced a mesh node feature as standard or clear advertising (product markings) of the meshing capability. Looks like the eve plug does and the nanoleaf bulbs don't, would be great if this could be highlighted in your videos too

Sounds like Matter isn't quite ready for the mainstream yet. With the point of Matter being interoperability it needs those extra functions available, especially energy reporting in my scenario.

I'll stick with Zigbee via ZHA for now but I'm hearing more manufacturers promising Matter in the future - there's a brand here (AU/NZ) that use Tuya for light switches, power sockets and more (their products are aesthetically pleasing) who are talking about Matter support coming so hopefully this means Tuya will make this standard allowing for many more devices, the Tuya integration in HA works but will not buy anything else Tuya until Matter is the protocol

Big thanks for the update!

Nice to have a UK video virtually all Matter devices videos are American & we can't get lost off the devices. 👍

Hopefully a new Matter update with Energy monitoring will be launched soon. Although I still cannot connect with Google home it's looking for a Thread network that does not exist?

The Smartwings blinds look like a great option! Unfortuantely, I just recently got shutters. Do you have any recommendations for matter compatible retrofits?

Thank you! As for me matter devices becomes twice more expensive from zigbee so, probably, will stay with my current zigbee and wifi infrastructure on home assistant.

I'm making my first smart home and have ordered most of these devices, it's good to know that the all work although some in limited capability... but I have a question specifically for the Eve app. As you said its not on android (and I only have Android devices), will I be able to add the Eve motion sensor to Home Assistant?
Also, I'm not sure but maybe you skipped a few Onvis matter over thread products (smart plug and smart button), I have those on order as well and hope they will work.

I like the Nanoleaf essentials bulb but in home assistant it keeps going unresponsive. I also can’t get it from home assistant to other smarthome ecosystems yet.

With the Eve motion, when upgraded, does the homekit version add Thread, or does it remain as Matter via Bluetooth ?

Ive had the Govee matter strip for about a month now. I find it works for about 2-3 days then wont connect to HomeKit. A hard reset and another install gets it back up, only to repeat the cycle again.

What thread radio did you use for your testing?

I wanted to be so wrong about my prediction of matter being just an other standard on the market. Actually I feel wrong but sadly in the wrong direction. Matter is still just an intermediate solution, new issues appear, when using it, still there is a need for lots of bad apps for each device and in addition lots of hugs too connect the devices. I would have wished for less needed devices, apps and more interoperability
