Matter 1.0 was officially launched back in October and now firmware updates are arriving this month. But before you jump into the Matter hype train, I just wanted to outline my experience of testing several matter devices over the last month and research on what it means for Apple Home and HomeKit users.

In this video I am going to take you through the take you through 7 things that will help you understand what Matter 1.0 means for HomeKit. We will cover what you need to get started, the differences between connectivity protocols, how to set up a device and categories supported. Along with this I am going to take you through the impacts Matter could have on features only found in HomeKit, performance and my privacy.

I've only just started to build/expand my smart home using Apple HomeKit. For the last 2-3 yrs, I've only had a Logi Circle 2 camera on my front porch due to a few packages being stolen. Back then I was only using Apple Home and not HomeKit but eventually updated to HomeKit about a year ago. I also have a few Hue lightbulbs but they were on the 1st gen bridge that did not work with Apple Home. I eventually upgraded to a newer Hue bridge and added those lights to Home. I replaced the Circle camera with a Logi Circle DoorBell and moved the Circle 2 camera to the backyard. More recently I've added some Meross smart devices like the garage door opener, smart light switch, and smart plug. I have a strong mesh network consisting of 3 Apple Airport Extremes, so looks like Matter isn't really gonna be a huge difference for me in the foreseeable future.

It's exciting to finally get access to other devices ans not be confined to the small amount or more expensive ones that work with homekit

Mate, please cover this CES of all devices that’s supported through thread and matter! I build my smart home with Thread in mind to begin with as well, I hate hubs.

Don’t like that you photoshopped a “Upgrade to Matter” pop up into the home app and didn’t even mention that this is NOT an option or something offered by Apple. If you want to illustrate a point, don’t make it look feasible only for people to struggle to get the pop up they can’t get.

Matter for me is less about using multiple voice assistants, and more that I can stop using multiple hubs.

I've got a Tradfri hub which controls a few smart blinds and lights, and also connects to two Hue bulbs that I was given for free. I can control my IKEA smart hardware through Homekit, but I can't connect to the Hue bulbs (I can through the IKEA Smart Home 1 app).

If I want to control the Hue bulbs via Komekit, I need a Hue hub.

I've also just bought an Aqara hub so that I can setup a blind roller blind shutter and water sensor.

I've got the Apple TV 4k as my main device.

My question is when everything moves to Matter, will I be able to use the ATV4k as my single hub throughout the house?

(I've also got a 2016 Nest Thermostat, but I haven't seen anywhere that this is going to be updated to Matter?)

We have Apple and Amazon devices in our house. The Apple Home supports Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread. Amazon Home supports matter over Wi-Fi, but not Thread. I have one Matter device, which uses Thread. Currently there is negative benefit in using Matter devices just for Apple Home use. And most will have to wait until 2023 for Amazon to even support Thread.

Hi, this was a very helpful and informative video. I am a new subscriber as well. By the way, do you know whether Nest thermostats, specifically, support Matter and can be controlled via HomeKit? Would purchasing and setting up a always-on powered thread device, such as HomePod Mini, allow this to be set up more easily and quickly?

So, plain and simple, if you only have Apple HomeKit right now with Apple and Nanoleaf products, Matter is more complicated than it needs to be right now, and it’s best to just stick with Thread?

Am I hearing that correctly or am I missing something here?

Because it just looks to me like Matter is a bit overly complicated at this point.

Do we need to keep the Apple TV or HomePod close to the devices for them to work properly ? In my case if smart accessory is to far it will become NO REPONSE

Around 1:15 you explain you can use multiple platforms. Doues maybe also create the possibilities to have others let your house control with some restrictions? Example I have evertthing in my homeklit. Als setup my home in google but with out cameras garage door oR Thermostat?

2:40 Correction: The original HomePod doesn’t support Thread.

honestly, for years I've been wondering why and if smart devices would ever just work with whatever and now there is.

Great video.. can you tell what are the current matter controllers? Can a matter controller and thread border be a same product?

If you can't add Matter devices to homekit directly, how do you do it then? I've been trying for days without success.. 8:42

Thank you for a more detailed video on Matter. With my home setup Matter might not be for me at this point. But in regards to Thread I have a HomePod mini and a couple of Nano Leaf thread light bulbs in my Home. Looking at the thread network in the Eve app I do not see the HomePod mini as part of the thread network. Could I be missing something?
