How To Fix Mouse Lag on 4K Screens

If you have connected your PC to a 4K screen you will often see a subtle but visual notable lag in the time between when you move your mouse and when it moves on the screen.  Using 4K screens on a computer can make things difficult to control.   You will find that your mouse appears to overshoot your movements and does not respond instantly.

There can be many causes of this problem, but in my case most of it was caused by using the wrong HDMI input on a screen.  I was using a large 4K TV as a computer screen and it just was not responding quickly to my mouse movements.  The solution was to move my video cable to from a standard 30Hz HDMI input to the 60Hz HDMI input.  Take a look at this short video which nicely demonstrates the problem and the solution to mouse lag on 4K.

4 bloody years I have been trying to solve this problem, and all I had to be was switch from the first port in the monitor to the second. Unbelievable that was even an issue to begin with. Thank you much.

Did not know different ports had different refresh rates. I was lagging in HDMI1, but once I looked at the manual, realized HDMI2 had the 60hz. Worked like a charm. Thanks!

For ppl with an NVIDA graphics card, try this. Right-click your desktop -> NVIDA control panel -> Change Resolution (in the Display section) -> click the icon of the monitor with issues and make sure the "Refresh rate" dropdown is set to at least 60Hz.

I was using a 4K monitor for my Xbox One X, but also had my PC plugged into HDMI 1, since I already know my computer isn't really 4K compatible and was having this issue. I fixed it by going to the Advanced Display Settings - Display adapter properties for Display 1 - List All Modes, and then scaling it back down to 2560 x 1440 @ 60Hz

Thank you for the video. I was racking my brain trying to figure out why my resolutions and settings were not changing the lag. Switch the HDMI cable to the other ports and it works perfect.

If anyone is still experiencing mouselag after this, it might be because your nvidia or AMD software is set to a lower Hz than 60. Go into your Nvidia/AMD software program and head into resolution settings. From there you can, in Nvidia atleast, see the Hz frequence. If it's not 60, change it to 60. Hopefully that helps.

I solved my problem of mouse and audio lagging, simply by formatting again! The first operation I did when opened for the first time the desktop, was to perform the installation of the chipset drivers, namely, the

I never turned on the internet until I finished this installation!

Don't let other processes install chipset drivers instead of the originals!

I installed everything else normally after that.

I found that, in my case, the problem lay in the conflict with the chipset drivers.

I was having a similar issue on my LG 27UD68 monitor and this did the trick for me:
Advanced Display Settings > Display adapter properties for display > List All Modes > changed the selected value to "2560 by 1440, True Color (32 bit), 60 Hertz"

If I drag a window around like you did it’s as sharp as can be. No lag. It’s just getting to the area where I want to click that is wonky and drunken. And regardless if video is playing or not. GPU usage is usually negligible except when 4k video is playing it jumps up 60 - 80%. I’m guessing the video card is lame but I hope not. Maybe the video RAM is inadequate?

Your the man!! worked like a charm. On the back of my tv, PC was connected through HDMI port with ARC, which was causing the laggy mouse and less clear image. I switched it over to the HDMI port with MHL and it works as it should now. thanks again.

Not exactly a solution since I used Displayport. But the issue was the same it seemed. 4k monitor randomly set to 30hz on displayport. Turned the monitor off (which is annoying since it moves everything to the other screen) and turned it back on and then it randomly went back to 60hz.

I'm using LG 4K screen and have been on 60Hz since I've bought it. I also have second monitor 1440p with same refresh rate, hence I'm noticing the lag soon as it happen.
With the instruction from this video, I'm able to notice that my monitor runs at 30Hz somehow, and there is no 60Hz option in the display settings.

What I did was to set the display port version from 1.4 (default), down to 1.2, and then back to 1.4 from the OSD. Now my monitor is back to 60Hz.

I hope this helps someone in the future.

So supposedly all my tv ports are 60hz based on the specs. Could it be my HDMI cable or the HDMI out on my computer?

Is it a thumbrule for any large screen to have one port set higher than the rest?
