Finland might not be the biggest military power in Europe—but it just might be the most badass. With elite winter troops, massive reserves, and near-unmatched artillery strength, this small nation has built a military machine that punches way above its weight. In this video, we break down why Finland’s army is one of the most combat-ready forces in Europe—and how it quietly became Russia’s worst nightmare.

For Finland, it's never been a question of "If?", but "When?".

One thing people often miss is the huge variety of skills Finnish soldiers have. When I participate in military refreshment trainings, I have noticed what a huge bemefit it is to have soldiers with different civilian trades. My brothers in arms come from all walks of life and in refreshment trainings we are able to make use of those skills and assign people tasks based on their civilian jobs. In professinal armies soldiers are just trained soldiers.

In sweden there have always been a joke about that "we will defend Sweden to the last finn" its all in good fun, and we respect our brothers in the east.

I remember when I used to be a 10-15 years old boy in the 2009-2014 years. I used to hate the fact that I'd have to serve in the military like it's still some ancient cold war period. In 2018 I completed my service, happy that I did it but still unsure of the importance, other than roleplaying and becoming a more resilient man.

Then Russia invaded Ukraine proper. And I was so happy that our country kept conscription, or we might have been in Ukraine's shoes. Now I am proud of our system, and myself for going through it. Now I understand why we needed it, and still need it.

Finland is in all aspects amongst the strongest, most innovative and undervalued countries in the west. Thank you Suomi! I did business in Finland for severalmyears in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Finnish people are humble, hard working and creative, simply awesome. Btw Sakko produces great ‘products’.

I lived in Finland for a year and they are a remarkable people - who speak an even more remarkable language!!! They operate from a basic concept called Sisu! It's kind of a natural "grit."
BTW, Poland is also a very formidable military power.

To put it simply - Russia invaded Finland in WW2. This is why the Finnish Army is what it is today. I love living in Finland.

Just to make note, that our conscription system isn't counted into the 2, 0% or the current 2, 5% military spending we have. It's separate from it. If it were to be taken into account the current spending level would be around 3, 0%-3, 5%

One important matter that wasn’t discussed in the video is that every year over 25 000 reservists are called for refresher training (kertausharjoitukset), which ensures that the skills learned during service aren’t forgotten.

The finns and the polish people are the actual shields of Europe nowadays, like they have the most prepared armies in the hole EU, constantly training and making big purchases of military gear.

Finnish infantry is basically trained to not expect any support. No artillery, no fancy scopes, no air support, no tanks. The infantry is expected to perform well with regular ak-styled assault rifles using iron sights, some ammo and camouflage. When you know how to excel with minimal resources, you can reap greater benefits from additional support and gear…

There was an excercise a few years back in Norway, I believe, where US special forces inserted troops by helicopter right into the Finnish kill zone, because their recon simply did not find the finns. That whole insurgency was anhillated in seconds once fire was opened 😂

We were taught in the Finnish army like this "We have to be ready for any threats, no matter where from the east it comes..."

Talking about "wealthier nations" is just stupid. Finland isn't poor. Its GDP per capita is higher than in UK or France.

Fun fact, the place my team has futsal practices in Helsinki in is a huge bunker. In peace time there is parking for around 200 cars, big gym, huge playground for kids (bouncing castles, trampolines, foam pits etc etc) cafe, 4 full size futsal fields. And much more. In case of emergency its "transformed" to a shelter in a day.

Did my 347 days back in 2014. Was 18 years old. Have been to couple of refreshment trainings since then and everytime you meet people from different occupations who bring so much to the table. You see people who have not picked up a gun in nearly a decade and still remember and know how to operate in wilderness. Thats how good the basic training is in finlands army.
